    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Maybe, but setting isn't tied to mechanics in the first place. Not even Eberron which was billed as built for 3e. There are only two settings I can think of where mechanics have been tied to setting. Dark Sun and Birthright, and you can use any edition for Birthright.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

When they make significant changes, they still won't need to create an entirely new setting around those changes, because settings are different from mechanics. However, 5.5e is not significantly different from 5e due to WotC's goal of compatibility.

Spell points is the more complex system, not the simpler one.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

There are already settings where they have a place. The Forgotten Realms has a place for Goliaths and Dragonborn. The argument being put forth is that there isn't a setting that does this, so 5e needs a setting built specifically for 5e. It doesn't. The Realms already does it. Greyhawk is so...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Almost. I was thinking about it last night and there are still the named spells. Those are technically Greyhawk specific, since they name Greyhawk wizards. Mordenkainen, Leomund, Otto, etc. Not that those are enough to make the core rules Greyhawk, but the core isn't 100% setting free.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

He can choose to in the 1st round just fine. The party isn't starting next to it, and most likely the dragon is flying and there would be no roll to breathe since there is no choice of different attacks. And if you think a supragenious 800 year old dragon isn't going to target the wizard...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

It doesn't look, walk or quack like the Forgotten Realms, though. There's literally nothing built into 5e default that is FR specific. Not..............one...............thing.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Because there isn't a difference. 1e, 2e, 4e and 5e do Eberron just as well as 3e and Eberron was built "for" 3e. Being built for 3e makes no difference with Eberron, and it won't with any 5e kitchen sink setting, either.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

In D&D lore they are very often the same being worshipped in different ways with different meanings. This of course would be up to the DM for his personal game, and WotC to tell us if it's official in some way that the deity is in an MtG setting under a different name. Again, this is often not...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

How is that specifically for 5e? In 3e I can have... The Empire (humans, orcs, halflings, and tieflings) The Mountain Kingdom (dwarves) The Hill Kingdom (dwarves and halflings) The Rebellion (humans, orcs, and aasimar) The Dragon Republics (dragonborn, lizardfolk, and kobolds) The Runic...

Sure, but nothing baked into core is specifically Forgotten Realms.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

You argued that the 5e rules bakes in the Forgotten Realms. Correlon isn't any more or less baked in OR setting specific than Action Surge is. 5e is setting agnostic. I wouldn't assume that.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Yes, but your 1e 10th level wizard probably has 20-25 hit points and can't survive the breath weapon even if he saves.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Nothing was baked into the 5e core rules for Forgotten Realms. Like at all. When I look at elves, the subraces listed are not Gold and Moon, they are High and Wood. The gods listed are for the Realms, Eberron, Greyhawk, Non-human and more. Not just the Realms.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

One of the guys I used to play with was DMing for 4 different groups. He had a huge map of the Forgotten Realms in his bedroom and used push pins to keep track of where each group was located. He also tracked time, so when groups passed each other at the same time, they'd hear about the...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I agree with you about damage spells being fun and being used by experienced players. That has been my experience as well. It's not just control spells. Also, given the discussions that I've seen here over the years, I think this site has a much higher percentage of people who DM/play to high...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I think they just wanted to do something new. 3e had the very popular Forgotten Realms, so they didn't need a new setting due to the unpopularity(if that's even the case) of Greyhawk.
