D&D General Which Campaign or Adventure Would You Adapt To Prestige Television?

I mean I guess but I nixed it in the OP for a reason.

That's not an adaptation of a module though, is it?

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

This raises* the question: what is the line between an abstraction and a simulation mechanic? *not "begs." That's not what "begs the question" means.

+ doesn't mean "no dissent." It just means, "be productive and civil in your debates."

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

There's a difference between "could survive" and "no chance of dying" at least if some attempt at modeling reality is the goal. There are other ways to do it than rolling hit point damage, of course, so we don't have to toss the baby out with the bathwater. But if the player says "20d6? I've got...

D&D General Which Campaign or Adventure Would You Adapt To Prestige Television?

No one reads the OP... I considered this, too, but thought it might be too expensive. RHoD is a great module I keep meaning to convert.

Right. it depends on how you might frame that failure. First of all, why were we making a roll to lift a tankard? Why wasn't this an automatic success (or failure, I suppose)? Whatever the reason, the failure doesn't mean "Lol, the barbarian is too weak to lift his ale!" The description of the...

D&D General Mapping: How Do You Do It?

The problem with mazes is by themselves they are simply not fun. I have had good success with having the PCs stalked through a maze, though, but then it is less about mapping and more about surviving and hoping to blunder across an escape.

D&D General Which Campaign or Adventure Would You Adapt To Prestige Television?

While true, this thread is about D&D tv.

Yes, rule elements like the very granular weapon reach and space rules, or weapons versus armor types, from AD&D 1E are simulationist rules.

Honestly, the closest thing to Sharn on screen has been Piltover from Arcane.

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

A couple very popular examples are Deus Ex and Dishonored. Skyrim is often considered close to an ImSim, moreso than Fallout 4, but many people think it fails at being an ImSim because there are characters you can't kill and situations that must be resolved a specific way. As with all things...

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

I did not define it because it isn't particularly important to the discussion, except to say that I am not focusing on the definition. GNS stands for Gamist Narrativist and Simulationist and is a TTRPG game theory framework from The Forge something like 20 years ago now. There are some folks...

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

The other kind of "sim" in video games that I think maps better to TTRPG play are "immersive sims" -- games that give you as many options as possible within the context of the play space and don't require you solve things in any particular way.

D&D General Which Campaign or Adventure Would You Adapt To Prestige Television?

Eberron would make a great basis for a show, although I would refer a Clone Wars esque animated series. Did they ever produce an Adventure Path for Eberron? I know there were a couple linked modules in 3.5 era, and there is an AL Eberron season or two, right?

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I have started a simulation focused thread for those interested in discussing it further. https://www.enworld.org/threads/what-does-simulation-mean-to-you.716497/

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

FIRST: This is a + thread, meaning that as we discuss this, we all recognize that we can have differing opinions about what "simulation" means in the context of TTRPGs. SECOND: As the thread title suggests this is about your personal definitions and opinions, not necessarily the S of GNS or...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I don't think "simulation" must necessarily map to "low power." You can do a simulationist super hero game if you care about how powers interact with the world, and certainly many hard sci-fi games like Traveller have a simulationist bent even when talking about FTL drives and planet wrecking...
