5E If not the word "race", what word instead?

I prefer type or subtype i.e. Humanoid type with the Elf subtype. For non-fantasy games, I prefer species.

DM question: how much do you incorporate PC backgrounds into the campaign?

Why are the snacks so salty? Is someone accusing them of metagaming?

    Spelljammer in 5e

In the Spelljammer campaigns that I ran previously, I used both the Spelljammer and Planescape setting stuff. The main difference being that portals were fast but useful only for individuals or small groups of some power, while spelljamming was relatively generally available to everyone, but...

    D&D and the rising pandemic

Even if it is not COVID-19, pneumonia is bad news. I hope he has a swift recovery.

On Choice, Consequence and the Right to Fail

I am in kind of the same boat as you vis-à-vis preplanned campaigns and adventure paths. I mostly use bits and pieces of said products as filler content for whatever is going on in the events that the player characters are pursuing. My own response to a situation like that would be to talk it...

Is the DM the most important person at the table

I think this is the sort of question that we can get a lot of anecdotes about, but for which there is little data (though it is possible that Wizards collected this data at one time...?)

Is the DM the most important person at the table

I am in sort of the opposite position as this. I am not currently the main GM for the group, but I host the games, arrange the schedule, and for the last two campaigns, have initiated what game we are playing.

What is the most statistically improbably die roll you've witnssed?

For a while, some of the guys I gamed with were into 3d6 straight down the line. I came to the session with a character with very good stats (I don't remember what they were), and the DM wanted me to re-roll in front of him. I proceeded to roll 17 on 3d6 six times in a row. In another game...

DM question: how much do you incorporate PC backgrounds into the campaign?

It really depends on the campaign. In some, the player character backgrounds are the campaign. In others, the player character backgrounds have no bearing at all on the campaign.

4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

I think that it can be done if we all remember two things... It is less confrontational to use statements that are clearly opinion, i.e. "[edition x] did not appeal to me because..." rather than ones that will be interpreted as statements of fact, i.e. "[edition x] is trash because..." And...

    Consequences of playing "EVIL" races

The best example of this is, of course, the Tales of Wyre, right here in our own Storyhour subforum.

How to address racism in a fantasy setting without it dragging down the game?

So, I was going to respond to this also, before I realised what was meant was, "No, you are (making things more complicated than necessary)." and not, "No, you are (the thing that you said I was)." Okay, I got this (hold my beer).

    Consequences of playing "EVIL" races

There are a couple of common threads among some of these creatures. The first is between Mind Flayers, Vargouilles, Ghouls, Shadows, and Vampires. These are creatures whose existence requires them or compels them to eat other sapient beings. We (people in the real world) have a very strong...

How to address racism in a fantasy setting without it dragging down the game?

For an example of this, in some of the settings that I've run games in, I use fantastical life-cycles for non-human creatures. Goblins do not have children, they spontaneously come into being, fully formed and with all of their 'adult sensibilities' intact. Now, goblins in this setting aren't...

Two Married Wizards Trying to magically make a Baby Question...

This is a good point. "Get the god(s) of Childbirth to do it" is also an excellent suggestion.

Two Married Wizards Trying to magically make a Baby Question...

Step Zero is, of course, talk it over with your DM. Ideally, he can set it up as a short series of adventures. I'd envision it as a three step process. Step one would be to get a thing to substitute as a womb. Some sort of magical box or bag or bowl, which has, or is rumored to have...

    Judges Guild and the Wilderlands

I think that person should choose one of those wants, and pursue it. Either (a) buy JG material with the understanding that the money will (at least tangentially) support someone with hateful beliefs, or (b) give up on that material.

    5E Do you DM?

I voted Other. Currently, I am mostly a player. Previously, I was mostly a referee. There's a bit of a pendulum effect over a cycle of a decade or so...

General Where do you design your adventures?

For me the Where is much less important than the When. Most of my adventure design is done either in the game room or in the car, but it typically happens immediately following the previous game. As the game session wraps up, I ask my players what they plan to do next, then I prepare for the...
