Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

There's been this obsession with wanting a "Generalist" Wizard even though the main reason for it's existence has been rendered obsolete in 5e as all Wizards get access to all schools of magic now. Every time some "Generalist" gets brought up: Traditions are like University degrees. And being a...

Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

Generally there's 2 routes that Cleric subclasses take, either it's Heavy Armor/Martial Weapons + Divine Strike, or it's Potent Spellcasting. Though with Potent Spellcasting there's a very limited number of damaging Cleric cantrips at the moment (like 2 if you include Xanathar's Guide).

Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

The wording of "If a false name comes to be the best expression of who you are, it becomes your true name." implies that you could simply say "Batman" when used on Batman to use true name magic on, but saying "Bruce Wayne" wouldn't necessarily work on him though.

Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

I remember True Name magic from the 3e Tome of Magic being the strongest example of why you shouldn't have a Skill-Roll based system for magic in the D20 system. Which was unfortunate because it had some interesting concepts. The ideas of True Names being tied to the Primeval Language and...

Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

Onomancer? Why don't they just call the True Namer since it's clearly that class from the 3e Tome of Magic. I almost got the Onomancer subclass mixed up with Oneiromancer (aka Dream Wizard which they should also make a subclass). The presence of such a Wizard means a lot of people are going to...

5E Eberron: Rising from the Last War Previews

I always felt that if there were firearms in Eberron it would be the Goblinoids that would have them, but that they would be forgotten inventions from the times of ancient Dhakaan. I think Keith Baker feels that they would instead be a relatively recent invention from a more modern Goblinoid clan.

5E Eberron: Rising from the Last War Previews

I wonder if some of the "no firearms in Eberron" policy has been relaxed a little, as the Goblin in the picture has a pistol and the Artillerist's Turrets have been renamed to "Eldritch Cannons". I also see that they're reusing a lot of the Wayne Reynolds art from 3.x era.

    New UA Paladin and Bard.

The Oath of Heroism could fit anywhere in the alignment spectrum, but I'd argue that believing in the idea of Destiny or Predetermination is philosophically lawful on many levels because it asserts the reality is orderly. Though ones actions and attitudes can most certainly be non-lawful even...

    Have Githzerai always been jerks?

In Planescape Githzerai are CN, and a lot of the fluff there reflects it. One of the most significant Githzerai was Karan, the factol of the Xaositect faction, but he was completely not like any Githzerai at all. They mainly became LN in 5e because of a poll of asking what their alignment...

    New UA Paladin and Bard.

Since each of these Unearthed Arcana are themed, I'm pondering what we might get for the Wizard/Cleric, Fighter/Rogue, and Ranger/Druid articles coming next...

    New UA Paladin and Bard.

The Crusader class got access to that school and a lot of it was about team work. In 4e a bunch of the team tactics related powers of the Warlord was inspired by the White Raven School.

    New UA Paladin and Bard.

The Oath of Heroism also reminds me of the White Raven fighting style school that was introduced in the Tome of Battle.

    New UA Paladin and Bard.

All of the places in Greek Mythology are in Planescape coexisting with other mythologies in the Great Ring, notably Arborea which was also known as Olympus in 1e before the setting existed. Planescape embraced the Hellenic Pantheon and other real world pantheons over most campaign world specific...

D&D Beyond: Lurker in the Deep

It's not Planescape until there's a bunch of in-character narrators who often contradict each other and standard D&D lore.

5E Spelljammer Confirmed? Adam Lee Drops Hints About "Jamming Out" Next Adventure Product

The really really large Spelljammer monsters were already ridiculously powerful and big, but back then 2e never had Challege Ratings just XP values for monsters. And I don't think it was ever given at what level a party could ever stand a chance at fighting a Beholder Tyrant Ship, which had the...

Here's What A 5' Square Actually Looks Like

The Aztecs apparently used a base 20 numeric system, but it's one I still think is still based on fingers. Also my rapier is a bit longer than many longswords of the hand and a half variety. I choose my blade length of my rapier to be based around the height of my belly button when standing...

There's nothing in that interview that denies there being other psionic cantrips considered that could do other values of damage or have other effects from Mind Silver.

    5E Roleplaying Goblin PCs

For 5e there's going to be at least 3 books that have printed out the Goblin PC stats: Volo's Guide to Monsters, Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and Eberron Rising From the Last War. There's roughly 3 different situations for Goblins in those worlds too. FR seems to have the more tradition take...
