D&D 5E Drudge, a magical laborer background - advice sought

OK. So what is the correct background for a nonmagical unskilled labourer?

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

So, you're envisioning determining cultures across racial lines? Why?

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Once again: We're not talking about a PvP-style alpha strike against an encounter with a single, low-hp target in. We're talking about contributions to the party over multiple, varied encounters over the course of an adventuring day. Now the monk can definitely contribute: I do not believe...

D&D 5E Thread closed, please delete

Remember the context for these changes is a massively shortened adventuring day. I think a caster with these houserules in that situation won't be much worse off if at all than a normal caster in a normal adventuring day.

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Yes. I brought up that the performance of monks was as good as a baseline fighter, but it was hard to build a monk able to perform as well as an optimised fighter. You then appear to have suggested that the existence of a PvP-focused build built to counter that generalised optimised Fighter...

    D&D 5E Counter-Attack Monk Build Ideas?

It sounds like the Drunken Master's Redirect Attack ability is what you're after, just minus the stipulation that the target of the redirect can't be the attacker. Worth asking your DM if you can give up the other ability of Tipsy Sway and change redirect so it only works on the actual attacker?

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Ah. So this is based on two characters fighting each other and the ability to create a build countering one specific threat, not the relative levels of optimisation available to a class?

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

No, I'm pretty sure I did not say that. I'm saying that assigning attributes to cultures is going to be tricky, because outside of "magic cultures", there will be parallels with real cultures. Particularly if those attributes include set ability score bonuses. And if they don't include set...

D&D 5E Thread closed, please delete

I'd be interested in seeing how well these rules work in countering the issue. The potential problem that I see is for Clerics, Druids, Bards etc - classes that rely on spell slots to heal. The higher spell slots available do not compensate for the increased incoming damage, leading to having to...

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Really? How does that work out? I would have thought that out of both shooting at a level-appropriate target, the fighter build would deal more damage. - They are both getting three attacks (unless the fighter action surges) but the fighter has a better chance of hitting due to combat style and...

D&D General me finally making the big monk discussion thread

Splitting off the "I am a skilled martial artist" from the "I channel magic through myself to do supernatural things" concepts might be worthwhile. Simply having an unarmoured fighting style for martial classes and an unarmed fighter subtype could do a lot of that. The issue with the baseline...

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Indeed, and if the character's ability score distribution, skill, background and class choices, and attitude are insufficient, there are suggestions for the DM to swap around some stuff for the character in some books. There is nothing wrong, per se about culture rules. However while D&D race...

    Shillelagh - Why no scaling?

No, it uses your spell attack modifier to hit.

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Cultural traits are way more of a potential minefield than racial ones.

    Shillelagh - Why no scaling?

I removed all weapon restrictions from Sneak Attack. I've yet to see any thematic or balance issues. I can see an interesting Beastmaster Ranger using Shillelagh-ed staff, Primal Beast companion and/or summoned Beast spell, since those will all key off Wisdom.

D&D General why do we not have an arcane half caster?

I wasn't specifically criticising you or your suggestion. I just picked your post because it was the most recent to place the swordmage as a half-caster. I do not think that half-casters have enough spells if people are representing the swordmage as casting spells: The swordmage is a character I...

D&D General why do we not have an arcane half caster?

Frankly, I'm not sure if a half-caster is the best template for a Swordmage. My image of a swordmage is that they don't chant and wriggle their fingers and cast one spell in a combat then just beat on stuff with a weapon. Instead they are shooting fire out of their weapon as they attack with it...

    D&D 5E Sell Me On Tasha's

Of the player-facing stuff, there was one class I had to tweak to change the power level. The Patrons are a useful way of encouraging social interaction into your campaign, but you may well be doing that already. Of the DM-only stuff, most is useful, but I found the Puzzle section to be not...

D&D General why do we not have an arcane half caster?

This concept may be a better source for class and archetype names. A name that describes what the class is will probably be more emotive than what they do.

Level Up (A5E) What would you call a 'Warlord' class? (+)

If the support abilities use language like "can" or "may", that also removes the idea that the class compels allies to take actions. The way I handled it, I had a common pool of maneuvers based on the BM ones, and different subclasses of the class focused on different Abilities and maneuvers...
