D&D 5E [Updated with cover!] The D&D Book Is.... Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft!

The business calculus (which is different from the artistic calculus) to using a pre-existing IP is how much recognition and attachment that audience has for it. And yes, I understand Innistrad is one of the more popular MtG settings. But the interviews released today have repeatedly dropped...

D&D 5E [Updated with cover!] The D&D Book Is.... Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft!

I don't expect them to be deep dives. The nations of Khorvaire in the Eberron book got 1-2 pages each, and 60 pages of Domains sounds fairly substantial.

D&D 5E New D&D Hardcover To Be Announced On The 23rd (Tomorrow)?

Well, yes. All of the 5e setting books (Eberron, Ravnica, and Theros) have followed that model. So this is in fact exactly what we've seen before, and exactly what I was expecting.

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I don't. Already my group's DM has to describe a scene three times; once for the PCs with basic vision, once for the ones with darkvision, and once for the Warlock with Devil's Sight. Adding yet more variations would just multiply that further. Similarly, conditional Perception bumps would...

D&D 5E Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

You know what this makes me want? A second stab at genasi using the the new lineage design model. Not just as a way to introduce better ability packages, but so you can mix and match their heritage and appearance more. Want your PC to look like a dwarf made of living stone or an elf with hair of...

D&D 5E So Where my Witches at?

Two points. First, what's "the concept"? As I tried to point out, there's a lot of flavors of "witch" possible and it's as hard to get people to agree on which should be the definitive one as it is to get then to agree on a definitive psionics model. Second, there's degrees of escalation and I...

D&D 5E So Where my Witches at?

Let's talk about class versus title. So on the one hand, I've bounced around the idea of a setting element where adventurer society is organized enough to have its own jargon, which includes tagging adventurers with class titles based on their demonstrated skill set. Something akin to military...

D&D General What does D&D look like without Death on the Table?

Well, I don't know that perma-death has ever been a game feature. Even if someone died at low enough level we couldn't cast Raise Dead ourselves, the DM made one available at a plot cost instead of a gold on. But if you're going to make it an explicit house rule and not just a de facto DM style...

D&D 5E My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

Now that I'm diving into the details of what's new or different from the UA material, one thing it took me a couple reads to notice is that the magic tattoos no long share an attunement slot. At least, I can't find the clause anymore, so if anyone spots it do let me know. Because to be honest, I...

D&D 5E My Quick and Dirty Tasha Read

More important, take a step back and ask what value it brings to the game to give PC abilities a random chance to backfire negatively? It doesn't feel cool when it happens, it doesn't add anything to the story, it just negates your action while inflicting a penalty on you or the group. It's...

    D&D 5E Tasha’s cauldron character thread

Here's a more mechanically focused idea for someone who enjoys battlefield control. A Warlock with a Genie Patron of the Dao variety can add their proficiency bonus in bludgeoning damage to one attack per turn. Which isn't a lot, but it's enough to trigger the new Crusher feat that lets you...

    D&D 5E Tasha’s cauldron character thread

Based on the UA as previews, one idea I'm stashing for an Eberron campaign is a Vulkoori Drow Path of the Beast Barbarian. You can skin all the Beast Path powers as things like manifesting scorpion tail and claws or arachnid style wall climbing. If it makes it in I totally want a Masquerade...

D&D 5E Soul Knife ability question.

Going by the UA wording, since I get my book in two days, then I'd think you would. The general rule is that you add your attacking stat's bonus to weapon damage rolls. The specific rule on PHB p195 is that you don't get that bonus if you use the Two-Weapon Fighting option for an extra attack...

D&D 5E Pact of the Vessel + Invocations

I fear not everyone gets references to classic movies anymore. Don't worry, at least some of us got it. :)

D&D 5E Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery is officially the most powerful feature.

I figure it's basically the D&D version of the Jedi Mind Trick. If you want to get past a guard at the door "We have permission to enter, let us through" is fine. So is "We have important information your boss will want to hear immediately." "Drop you weapon and march alone into the monster...

D&D 5E Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery is officially the most powerful feature.

Yes, that is the relevant question, and no, I don't believe it is. And I'm usually one that's all for keeping the casters in check. Nothing about Concentration suggestions it's in any way strenuous. And after a little googling, here's an archived Mike Mearls tweet from 2014 saying Concentration...

D&D 5E Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery is officially the most powerful feature.

Indeed. Checking the PHB, the Concentration rules on p203 say nothing about preventing Short Rests, and the Short Rest rules on p186 only say it requires the PC "does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds." This isn't the first time I've seen people...

D&D 5E Aberrant Mind's Psionic Sorcery is officially the most powerful feature.

And here's the real issue. It's not Subtle Suggestion that's overpowered, it's people treating Suggestion like it was Improved Dominate Person where you can order them to do whatever absurd thing you please. Which seems to be a distressingly common issue, from the threads you see on the Internet.

    D&D 5E Tasha's Group Patrons Preview

Seriously, I can't think of the last time they added something that was pitched as "And here's a brilliant new idea no one's had before!" and not "Here's something a lot of people are already doing, which means it's something they find useful for their games, so here's some rules to offer...

D&D 5E KoTOR Force Jump / Mass Effect Charge like ability

Wait two weeks and see what the final version of the psionic Fighter subclass in Tasha's Cauldron is like. It's self-admittedly trying to capture the style of exactly the references you cite. The last playtest version, the Psi Knight, had a Psi-Powered Leap that added significant distance to...
