D&D 5E Is my brother a problem player? Or am I just a bad DM?

Vote? It's 'accept this is the way it's going to be, or I am not DMing.' Then pick up the TV remote, turn on Family Guy and let them decide what to do next - agree to your terms, or watch TV with you. You have to be firm at times with your players. Its a fair request by a prospective new DM...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

No, all the editions prior to 5E alienated casual gamers in order (worst for newbs to best for newbs) Pathfinder (worst), then 3.5 (not far behind PF) then 4E (next level down), then AD&D (an old school complicated mess that made little sense to outsiders) then 2E (smoothed over and simplified...

They use AEDU powers and retconned the entire lore.

D&D 5E Is my brother a problem player? Or am I just a bad DM?

Because its a magical horse with 18th level Cleric spellcasting and 9th level spells, 120 fly speed, an AC of 20, Perception of +9, Telepathy 120', 150HP, innate spellcasting, magic resistance, and magic weapon attacks, that just happens to be CR12 (and thus just allowable with True Polymorph...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

The wanted to lure in the 'WOW' crowd, and address the broken unbalanced mess of 3.5. Both understandable and reasonable goals. They just didnt read the room. They would up fracturing the fanbase (that they all but openly acknowledged with 5E) and working against DnDs main strengths (its...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

Tome of Battle (and SWSE) had me really excited for what 4E was going to be. I kept hearing from the devs that they were the basis for the new edition, and I loved both of those games/ sourcebooks and the 'per encounter' manouver system. Then 4E came out, and it just was miles off what I was...

D&D 5E Cloak of Elvenkind - Advantage to Stealth AND -5 to passive perception?

If the Perception check relies solely on sight, then it gets a -5 in dim light, or automatically fails if you have the Blinded condition (as described in the condition), or if the creature you are trying to observe is invisible/ in heavy obscurement (which causes the observer to have the blinded...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

But that's not edition wars. 2E and AD&D were remarkably similar, and 3E was a natural flow on from the Player Option books, with major changes being Feats and a unified D20 mechanic. 4E went a completely new direction, that hasnt been seen before (or notably, since). Both mechanically and...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

Considering 5E is the predecessor of 4E, the impact of 4E in fracturing the base (like it or loathe it) and the stated goal of 5E to reunite that base, it's largely inevitable that it gets discussed in that context. 4E is also notable as being the most radically different edition. 1, 2 and 3...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

It was precisely that specialization or insane amounts of system mastery that was 3.Ps success. As a former devotee of both systems, I've lost track of the amount of time I spent trawling through the SRD's of each system and slapping together 20 level 'builds' using feat, prc, subsystem, class...

D&D 5E Cloak of Elvenkind - Advantage to Stealth AND -5 to passive perception?

If I accept this argument, it is easier to Search for an invisible creature or a creature when blinded (a Perception check that does not rely on sight) than it is to Search for a creature in dim light (which apparently relies on sight). So I dont accept this argument.

D&D 5E Cloak of Elvenkind - Advantage to Stealth AND -5 to passive perception?

If you're directly observing someone they cannot hide from you. It guarantees failure in an Stealth attempts, and reveals them automatically if they were hidden.

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

Agreed, but that was still a monumental moment in RPG history. PF was the quintessential Fantasy Heartbreaker that actually (for a brief period) not only competed with the elephant in the room in DnD, it actually overtook it. Nothing else had ever come close before. Back in the day DnD was so...

D&D 5E Is my brother a problem player? Or am I just a bad DM?

Seriously OP, its the last DM that was the problem. Where you screwed up was agreeing to DM this same party without laying down some ground rules first. If I was you? Me (as You): Ok guys, I agree to DM those same PCs from the last campaign in place of your last DM. But I have conditions...

D&D 5E Cloak of Elvenkind - Advantage to Stealth AND -5 to passive perception?

The -5 to Perception in dim light only applies to Perception checks to see stuff. It doesn't apply to Perception checks (or passive perception) generally (which rely on all 5 senses). Him searching for a hidden creature doesnt incur the -5/ Disadvantage to Perception because he is not relying...

D&D 5E Asking for a bit of recent D&D history

3.5 lead to some really toxic play, where people played (and endlessly debated) 'builds' and not characters. The game itself became more of a side event to the required level of system mastery required to know your splatbooks inside out, and how to build some PC reliant on feats and PrCs from...

D&D Movie/TV Hugh Grant To Play Villain in the D&D Movie

It comes natural to him. Probably the most typecast guy in film, right after Jason Biggs who constantly gets cast as the same 'nerdy awkward Jewish virgin' he played in American Pie despite being Italian. That said some of the best actors broke typecast by portraying villain's. Keanu Reeves...

    D&D 5E Mounts and Questions

An Axe beak is pretty much the same thing isnt it? Maybe drop the Damage down to 1d4 from its kick, and increase movement speed or let them dash as a bonus action (they run at like 70kmph!)

D&D 5E Cloak of Elvenkind - Advantage to Stealth AND -5 to passive perception?

When a PC takes the Search action (if actions are important) and is actively looking for a hidden thing, then yes. Otherwise its Passive Perception. With hidden creatures/ hiding and Perception checks, a creature wanting to Hide: Must be in a place where they can Hide (generally heavily...
