• Welcome to this new upgrade of the site. We are now on a totally different software platform. Many things will be different, and bugs are expected. Certain areas (like downloads and reviews) will take longer to import. As always, please use the Meta Forum for site queries or bug reports. Note that we (the mods and admins) are also learning the new software.

    Unearthed Arcana: Barbarian and Monk

Well, the timing works out, based on turnaround on previous UA articles and final products.

    Unearthed Arcana: Barbarian and Monk

Why not both? It's certainly thinking outside the box: the comics crossover is supposedly quite fun, and apparently both sides really put aside corporate ego to make it happen and let Patrick Rothfuss and Jim Zub have their way with both IPs. Unusual in this day and age.

A new box set coming out in November: https://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products/dungeons-dragons-vs-rick-and-morty

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Most enchantment spells in 5E have an effect after they end that can be major trouble for the enchanter.

    D&D Beyond: Tricking Asmodeus

Well, Ghosts of Saltmarch has extensive notes on how to weave together with the adventures from the Yawning Portal book. They might keep this up in future products...

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

It is an evolution from the 4E implementation ( as is the Skill system), so "kept" is the right word, even if it is changed. The rituals are pretty well balanced around niche protection, now that I look at them more carefully: the Nature Cleric or Druid is going to be the one with the "speaking...

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Arguable, and I am sure they did argue that out when putting the spell list together. It costs all that, and a Spell slot. Not for in the field work.

    Unearthed Arcana: Barbarian and Monk

Ya know...the timing for this test would also work very, very well for the Rick & Morty boxed set. And the potential zaniness is a real fit there. Those evil bastards, will i have to buy this box???

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Resurrection is not a Ritual spell in 5E. Very few are, they kept the system from 4E but beat rituals with the Nerf bat pretty hard. Here's a full list for your convenience: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?365822-Alphabetical-list-of-ritual-spells

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Well, in 5E no Spells above 5th are Rituals, and the Spells that are Rituals are not terribly cheesy. Stuff like Identify or Speak with Animals. Not stuff that intrudes on Rogue/Fighter Skill space.

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

About what it is worth, honestly.

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

I mean, that's not an option until Level 13, so most players never see it. Also, not a Ritual, so it uses a high value spell slot. In fact, not many Spells are rituals...

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

If you use Knock, everything within a 300 foot cubic radius knows it. The Rogue, however, can do that quietly and quickly. Enchantment magic doesn't just annoy people, it enrages them supernaturally. Not a good Plan A.

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Rituals do still have component costs, and time constraints. Narrative constraints are the realm of...the DM dunDunDUUUUUN

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

That was just off of the top of my head: pretty much across the board, letting the Skilled do their thing is going to be the best option, rather than spells.

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Open a lock quietly, without alerting an army of Sahuagin to the player's presence and location. Convince somebody to help or not hinder you without causing violent consequences later on. Moving freely without resource usage. Indeed, WotC went to some trouble to make all Skill-avoiding Spells...

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

I really like the idea of replacing spells with Skill checks: use the dice damage information for spell slots from the DMG as a guide, and use something like the Beserker Exhaustion rules

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

Yes, exact details aren't given because they are pure judgement calls: the game relies on the DM to adjudicate. Features, not bugs.

4E Where was 4e headed before it was canned?

That last part is what makes it elegant: the way the math works on rolling the d20 is what makes it robust.

    D&D Beyond: Tricking Asmodeus

I mean, Wizards of the Coast paid him a big wad of straight cash money over 20 years ago to settle all outstanding issues, so that's not a live problem.
