In Search of Flexible Defense Mechanics

One of the things I'm really trying to nail down is a way to make defense something other than a static value. To add flexibility and options for the players. I've had several ideas, and after playtesting sessions there's always something significant to change. It just doesn't quite feel right...

    Fantasy party-based comics?

Other than the official D&D comics over the years, what comics out there do a great job capturing the high fantasy party based adventure? Most of my comic reading days were in the 70s-90s, so my selections are obviously going to be influenced by that and I'm sure I'm missing a bunch. So other...

How well do you predict non-OGL/CC games will do?

Based on the other discussion prompted by Ben Riggs. I never posted in the thread here, but I did respond to him and James Lowder directly on the FB post they other day. The discussion was around how the OGL impacted non-d20 publishes. Ben said that the OGL helped 3PP but that wasn't really the...

Mechanics that support what you want as a Player to feel like you matter

There are a couple threads floating around about what matters to you as a player, what you want to be able to do as a PC in the game, and what your expectations are while playing. Rather than hijack one of those threads (to be honest, I'm not sure which one would fit this topic best anyway), I...

OSR BECMI, how do you say it?

First, I just noticed when creating this thread, there is no prefix for B/X or BECMI. so I guess OSR is the closest prefix. Anyway, I heard The Rules Lawyer say today that he pronounced BECMI as "Beck-me". I've always said "B, E , C, M, I" saying each letter. That's how I remember it when it...

Deleted scene from 1978 LoTR film

Ralph Bakshi posted a brief deleted scene of the fight between Gandalf and the Balrog on his X page here. It's kinda neat.

What do you want in a shapeshifting class?

Seems like no matter what happens in D&D, no one is happy with the druid shapeshifter subclass. So what are you looking for in a shapeshifter class, keeping mind it would have to balance with other classes? Meaning, "I want to change into a flying griffin at low level" might not be an option...

D&D General Spelljammer Soundtrack (Heavy Metal various artists)

How I didn't know about this until now is a sin. Several heavy metal bands (including my favorite local band, Red Fang, creators of the best music video ever in Prehistoric Dog) all did tracks for it. Definitely has a Heavy Metal (movie) vibe to the music. So this old man digs it!

D&D General The Evolution of the Monster Stat Block

@darjr other thread about the Gamehole announcement got me thinking. They mentioned how they will modify the monster stat blocks slightly. So a thought exercise. Let's look at how the monster stat blocks evolved over time. Did they get better? Worse (new Coke)? OD&D The stat blocks weren't...

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

There have been a few threads about this recently. One asking if people want a mundane high level fighter or a magic one, one asking how you close the gap between fighters and casters, etc. But I want to narrow the scope for this discussion to what a higher level mundane fighter would look like...

D&D General Nolzur creates inclusive miniatures, people can't handle it.

So Nolzur came out with these miniatures, and the comments are like you expect (mostly jokes on clerics healing themselves): For a group that keeps harping on the importance of verisimilitude, they seem to ignore how there is a whole swath of people today (including religious people like a...

    Rulebooks with best GM advice

5e gets criticized a lot for having poor support/guidance for new DMs. Which rulebooks do you think do a really good job at this, and what specifically do they do that you find really useful for new GMs?

    Best comic storyline

Inspired by @Whizbang Dustyboots other thread. What is the best storyline from any comic (or crossover, like X-tinction Agenda covering X-Man and Avengers). Funny enough, I've never been a huge fan of Spiderman, but I gotta say my top 2 choices are both Spiderman My #1: The Kraven storyline...

    D&D General Best outdoor adventures?

What are some of the best outdoor adventures published for D&D? Focus on wilderness exploration rather than the dungeon crawl. Isle of Dread? Forest Oracle (I jest)

    Dice pools for damage too?

Many of us know or are familiar with dice pool systems. Most cases, the dice pools are used to making checks (ability checks, attacks, etc.) I can only think of one where quasi-pools are used for damage, and that's exploding dice (like WFRP). I'm sure there are others. But why don't we see more...

Fan of Complex Spell Systems? The beast is unleased...

Some background: One of my favorite things about playtesting is how the testers can find things you never thought of. The collaborative nature of multiple view points has an opportunity to do some really neat things. The key is that as a designer, you have to put your pride aside and be willing...

Spells with varying levels of success?

As playtesting for GEAS is progressing, the ways spells work has changed. Rather than D&D-like, where when you cast a spell it does X all the time, we're really liking spells that have varying levels of success. Kinda like Earthdawn. For example: Whenever you cast a spell, there is a...

Release Mirrored Mountain is Live (Endless Quest Conversion)

Exciting news! Today we can release The Mirrored Mountain! This adventure is a conversion of the popular Endless Quest book from the early 1980s, Mountain of Mirrors. Some things have changed, naturally, and areas have been added to help flesh it out to better fit an adventure format. In true...
