    D&D 5E Low magic player characters in D&D 5e

Others have hinted at this already, but here's what I would do. Only two classes: Fighter and Rogue, but allow Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters. They have access to every spell on every list. All spells that can be cast as rituals can ONLY be cast as rituals. If you're a fan of Law and...

    D&D 5E Which Urban Setting for D&D 5e?

You might want to check out Vornheim. It's more of a guide to running urban games than a city sourcebook exactly.

D&D 5E Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

Can someone tell us a bit about the 5e aboleth, and how it compares to its previous incarnations?

D&D 5E Subclasses, complexity and decision points

I strongly disagree. If most classes have the same underlying subsystem, there's no way to avoid said subsystem it if you hate it. In a system where every class has slightly different mechanics, it's very easy to choose mechanics you like and avoid what you dislike.

D&D 5E 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Just ran a little bit of Isle of Dread with the new playtest packet. This was our group's first foray into Next since the very first packet. We were generally impressed. Everyone seemed to have about the right amount of options without needless bloat. Not having skills was *fantastic* and...

D&D 5E Playtest This: Red Dragon

Surely there's a better way to make a challenging dragon with much less text.

    New Sorcerors are too "vulgar"

You don't think the Sorceror physical transformations step on the toes of monstrous races (tiefling, dragonborn, etc) with similar qualities?

    New Sorcerors are too "vulgar"

I've decided I like the idea of Sorcerors spending Willpower to cast spells and revealing more of their inner essence as they lose Willpower. What I don't like is an actual physical monstrous transformation. A draconic sorceror might gain firebreath and energy resistance spells as they lose...

Am I the only one who doesn't like the arbitrary "boss monster" tag?

I loved the "flat math" idea. With only HP and damage consistently going up by level, a monster's level relative to your own automatically determines whether it's a Minion, normal, Elite, or Solo monster. With this second playtest, we're seeing attack bonuses go up, and monsters with...

    Combat Superiority and Damage/HP bloat

It really seems like there's a portion of the fanbase that does not want the Fighter to have any unique toys at all. Very strange.

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

No no. HP and damage still scale quite a bit by level in 5e. It's the other aspects of the math that are much flatter.

I Like The Simple Fighter [ducks]

We need a simple Fighter. We also need that Fighter to hit like a truck. The class needs to be clearly and obviously the best at hitting things and killing them. Period.

In praise of the Healer Theme

I suspect Warlord will be a theme., so it's possible to have Barbarian Warlords, Fighter Warlords, Paladin warlords, etc. As long as it's possible to play an inspiring or tactical fighter, I'm happy.

Review of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games

Absolutely. I was totally on board with a sword-and-sorcery Appendix N reimagination, and got yet another "OSR"-style D&D clone with a few weird house rules.

In praise of the Healer Theme

Source? My impression is that feats are now packaged as themes, and if the DM allows, they can be broken up to let players choose a la carte.

In praise of the Healer Theme

I suspect most parties will still need a healer of some kind, magical or otherwise. This just opens up the ability for any class to step into the Cleric's shoes. The other thing that's interesting is that this form of healing isn't as annoying as playing a cleric, because the other PCs have to...

In praise of the Healer Theme

Seeing as how there isn't a way to cherry-pick that one feat(since feats are bundled into themes now) I don't see the issue. I would probably not have the feat maximize spell healing, though, just healing from potions or healing kits made by the Healer.

Review of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games

This. A real attempt at an "Appendix N" RPG would have stripped out far more idiosyncratic D&Disms than Joe actually did. That's not to say it's not a fun take on OD&D style, just that the DCC RPG doesn't really emulate the old pulp sword&sorcery that inspired D&D.

In praise of the Healer Theme

One of my favorite elements of the 5e playtest so far has been the Healer theme on the Pelor cleric. Healers can make potions, healing kits, and antitoxin at half price, which is nice. However, after levelling they gain the ability to brew maximized cure potions and they can maximize Hit Dice...
