D&D 5E What Monsters got nerfed from early D&D/AD&D to now/5e

To quote John Rambo from the movie First Blood " Name it".

Players choose what their PCs do . . .

Actually they are not different descriptions of the same action. " I wink at the maiden" is an action. The player has complete control of this action. How an action is reacted to or received is not part of performing that action. Desired effects are just that- desires. Actual outcomes or...

How Many Actual Sessions Do Your Campaigns Last?

My 5E campaign just concluded this past week. It began in September 2014. We played 77 sessions over that time taking several breaks for other games and then picking the campaign back up. Average session was about 3 hours so a little over 230 hours of play. At some point in the future I plan to...

Could use some help on painting skin tones....

The use of the word "blob" may be an indication that your paint is too thick. Most miniature paint needs to be thinned with water a bit before application to go on smooth. It is better to do two thin coats than one thick one.

Does the world exist for the PCs?

This is not a universal play style. D&D can be and has been played without improv acting and its associated buzzwords. While improv can be fun and not a wrong way to play if the group finds that most fun, it far from being the only way to run a game. There are those who still enjoy the game...

D&D 5E Test of the Warlords- A Retrospective

I have run this adventure in its native system and it was a blast. To really make the adventure click, the players have to really want to invest in their domains and see them grow and thrive. If you have a group that just wants to be wandering murderhobos forever this adventure will NOT be...

What is the Tower of Zephyros for?

    Ummm..... Zephyros perhaps?

Does the world exist for the PCs?

When it comes to the game world, it exists for the benefit of the players, and not necessarily for the PC's. The world is a creation crafted to serve the people at the table and it doesn't consider or care about the fictional characters that inhabit it. While the DM lays the groundwork of...

D&D 5E Report and advice after our first session in Ghosts of Saltmarsh

I have run the original adventure several times and haunted manor makes perfect sense being largely empty. The gang of smugglers need such a place for their hideout. It wouldn't make sense to have the manor's upper levels crammed with monsters, which would draw attention to the place, while the...

Amazon ratings of Ghosts of Saltmarsh

Are you kidding? The Forest Oracle provided so may laughs not to mention an epic thread here which provided more entertainment than any other module of similar page count. For pure entertainment value I give The Forest Oracle 5 stars!

What does it mean to "Challenge the Character"?

When a town guard says " Halt who goes there?" then the guard is challenging the character. The player isn't present in the setting. Do I win? :p

Why is the shortest lived edition, still one of the most popular?

Quite true, and the Moldvay set did all that in just 64 pages including art. It was elegant in its brevity. With just that one slender book, some dice and a pad of graph paper you could have hours and hours of entertainment.Nothing published since has provided that level of completeness at that...

Miniature scale creep is out of control!!!!!

Wargames Foundry produces quite a few ranges of 28mm figures. A lot of the historicals work well in fantasy games too.

    Black miniatures painting recipe

What type of black are you trying to achieve? There is plain flat black, faded black, glossy black leather, etc. The colors and techniques to get those effects will be different.

Miniature scale creep is out of control!!!!!

I was becoming aware of this issue in the early 90's when 28mm started replacing the 25mm standard for fantasy minis. Once size creep begins, forever will it dominate your destiny.,

    What paints do you use?

Selecting the best paint will depend on several factors including your painting style, what types of models you will be painting, and what you will use them for. If you are painting minis for tabletop game use then they will handled and sometimes roughed up a bit. Vallejo model color tends rub...

What is the difference between hidden and unseen?

If you are invisible then you are unseen (unless someone can see/detect invisible) and you may also be hidden. If the invisible creature farts loudly then it is still unseen but not hidden.

4.33 Years in: What Now for 5E? (and have we reached "Peak Edition?")

I don't put much stock in the "evergreen" label. D&D Essentials was advertised as evergreen too. When is the next print run of that. Nothing is forever except editions that are no longer actively supported.

Fallibility of memory indeed!! B3 was Palace of the Silver Princess, The Lost City was B4.
