Nice start.

Okay, admittedly I have to deactivate all my computer-activity related brain cells, but ... I can do that. ;)
And I do not like the president son subplot.

I am eager to figure out what Tony is really doing and how Jack and FBI chick screwed it up now. ;)

Yeah, it's almost impossible to believe that Tony is really a bad guy. I think we'll find out tonight at the end of the 4th hour.

Also, is it just me or is this lady President just not coming off as believeable?

Still, it's great to have bauer back in action. Been too long.

Yeah, I'm not really diggin' the new president. I think they should bring back President Palmer. I mean, if they can bring back Tony, they can bring Palmer back too, right? :)

Actually, considering the frequent demise of Presidents in this show, I'm thinking that she'll be lucky to survive half the season. :)

I thought it was funny in the beginning when the FBI were taking Bauer away. The guy was like "We will adjourn today and meet back tomorrow at this time". My roommate and I were like 'What, that's not gonna be possible.' Then I said 'Actually, knowing this show, it could very well end at near 8am the next morning after him saving the world and ending up in that same courtroom again.'

I like 24, and I'm enjoying the show so far, but I find that a lot of themes from prior seasons are cropping up in a painfully obvious manner in Season 7. Chief among these are friends who become enemies, enemies who become friends, a traitor in CTU (now the FBI), a subplot personally affecting the President (or President's family), and so forth.

I do like the foreign country angle, which is a nice turn. I also like the CTU being reformed angle, and especially the re-appearance of characters from former seasons.

These don't really bother me, because the details are different enough to keep things interesting. I mean we also know that by 8pm or so, they will have neutralized the CIP device and will be working to uncover a bigger picture problem through the second half of the season. That's how 24 works, and it's ok.

I'm still a little pissed that they brought Tony back, but seeing him and Jack in action together, I'm sure I'll get over that pretty soon. It's good to see Bill and Chloe, but what happened to Bill's wife? And Morris, I noticed Chloe was still wearing a wedding ring, what's up there?

I was a little surprised at Bill's appearance, but I guess it's been a few years. As for Chloe, I hadn't noticed it (glad that you mentioned it). I wonder if she's holding on like Tony is.

Guys: Any chance we could keep spoilers (no matter how minor) for later episodes out of threads for the earlier ones? We're a little behind here in the UK!

Anyway, one thing I really liked about this episode was the opening, with CTU finally being called on all the abuses (torture) of the previous seasons. This was something that always really bugged me, and it's good to see it being addressed. I especially liked
Jack's admission in the second episode that he felt this was the way it should be - that he and CTU should be accountable to the people.

However, I really didn't like the way all this rhetoric, and the comments that "the FBI isn't CTU - we do things by the book even when it's inconvenient", went out the window the moment it was inconvenient - with the red-headed FBI agent telling Baur to do "whatever it takes" knowing fine well that he really would have gouged the eye if necessary. Honestly, what's the point of replacing CTU with a unit within the FBI if the professed aversion to illegal acts is just lies and hypocrisy?

On the other hand, the show has now reached a point where it just doesn't work if Jack really is forced to step back from doing "whatever it takes", so I suppose I can live with it...

Overall, I liked this episode. A solid start to the new season.
