2nd Wind - anytime ?

For some reason we started playing you had to be bloodied to use second wind, but thats not correct is it.

I read up the part in PHB1 and it doesnt say you have to be bloodied ?

No need to be bloodied to use your second wind.

If the hit points gained from the second wind are more than the number of hit points below your maximum, you regain up to your maximum hit points.

I am looking at getting the Cincture of vitality, to keep the extra a THP.

As an Earthstrength Warden i am looking at getting 2nd winds up to 4 by Epic.
And use them more aggressively to take the heat off the rest of the party....

Especially the crazy monk.

At the start of the encounter by just running in as a target and second winding.
 

I frequently made the "have to be bloodied to use Second Wind" mistake when I started playing.

For me, it may have been because the system I had previously played (Star Wars Saga Edition) required you to be at "one-half your maximum hit points or less" in order to use Second Wind.
 

It seems most people wait until they are bloodied before using the second wind because their healing surge is pretty high for it and it wouldn't be worth actually using until you are close to or at 1/2 your hit points. It's true you can use it at any time and only heal up to your full hit points and not above for any kind of temporary hit points.

Heh. SAGA was also the game I learned before 4E and we frequently made the mistake of making 4E PCs take OAs whenever they chose to second wind in a threatened square, though we didn't apply the half-hit-point-conditional use.
 

I know it has already been answered but..

2nd wind, can be used in the following ways

: As a Dwf, as a minor action at any point
: As anyone else, standard action at any point
: It can only be used once during an encounter
: It allows you the same benefit as Total Defense
: Certain skills and powers allow you to spend you 2nd Wind or allow another character to spend it outside of the above circumstances

There is no amount of HP you should be at but typically it would be wise advise not to use your 2nd Wind outside of being bloodied, after all it would be a waste.
