Lorent recalled a number of facts:

The elves of Uvaraen were ancient lore-keepers who were wiped out by the cataclysmic arrival of a shooting star. Chomylla was an Uvaraenni who is said to have escaped the catastrophe.

The Diamond Staff was one of three long-lost Lore-staffs of the elves of Uvaraen. Made of magically elongated diamond, each facet was inscribed in a long-forgotten ancient elven script.

The staff was said to house a remnant of the personality of it's creator, Chomylla, and her vast knowledge of ancient elven magics, as well as the knowledge of several other Lore-keepers.

Dretchroyaster was a Green Dragon who was famed for his love of hunting Centaurs. Over a century ago, he devastated the Dalelands and battled an adventuring company called the Merry Mauraders. He has not been seen since that time.

Imani hired the group with the specific task of retrieving the staff before the Cult of the Dragon were able to unlock its secret knowledge.

"Confirmed. We are agents of Sage Imani." Shade-9 confirmed remaining motionless against the black spire as Chomylla spoke - not the demands of the other voices - an answer and a plea.

The implications of the disembodied words assembled quickly in the Warforged mind as somewhere above, movement registered through the mist as his companions descended towards him. But for the moment his attention remained fixed inward, the Voice of Chomylla was a direct connection with the mission objectives - and the Dragon Dretchroyaster possessed them both.

Shade-9's optics shifted towards the darkness around him, realising that they were getting closer as another element of Chomylla's warning registered - the Dracolich was aware of him, contact with the node had been enough to distract it from its immediate focus and to bring it to the hidden spire on which he stood.

That was both a potential aid and a dangerous position. Shade-9 turned to focus on the north-east luminosity as internal heuristics responded, shifting him to tactical alertness.

The Warforged Infiltrator realised there was little time for interrogation, they were at a critical juncture and Chomylla had explicitly warned that her opportunity to communicate was limited. Shade-9 prioritised accordingly.

"Confirm: The Diamond Lore-Staff is nearby and held physically by Dretchroyaster...

- Identify the safest route from this Node to your current location?
"

Then the second question "What must we know to separate the Staff from the Dracolich?"

Shade-9 Shifted his position, his internal drives focussing his on the mission outcome, but there was still the other presence in the darkness - Shade-9 had been offered power by the Mountain King, and though he had not answered, still Ogremoch was there lurking

"Can the Power of the Node be used against Dretchroyaster without accepting Ogremoch's service?" the question was offered to Chomylla, but Shade-9 did not know if she would be able to answer.

[PRIMARY DIRECTIVE: PROTECT NEW LIFE]
[MISSION DIRECTIVE: RECOVER DIAMOND LORE-STAFF]

Shade-9

"Can the Power of the Node be used against Dretchroyaster without accepting Ogremoch's service?"

"Perhaps..." came Chomylla's stifled reply before it became obvious to Shade-9 that she was quite busy performing some sort of battle-of wills with the Dracolich, and holding her attention for any longer would likely do more harm than good.

The elemental node rumbled under his feet, as if the Mountain was growing restless awaiting his subservience. Through his connection to it, he could "feel" Copper climbing onto the higher part of the spire, above the mists that shrouded his visual sensors. He had shut all his relevant valves, but the mist's toxicity was beginning to eat at his outer casing.

OOC: Shade-9 should roll a dc14 CON Save or take 11 Poison damage. He doesn't breathe, so he's not as vulnerable to it as the others, but he's not immune to poison, and he's been down there a few minutes.

Copper

Climbing onto the top of the Spire, Copper was able to sit on the strange rock while waving his torch around. It sputtered whenever a wisp of the foul-smelling mists swirled through it. The cavern was large and dark, but he could see a ledge about twenty feet to the north-east, and a little below him. The shadows beyond seemed to clearly represent the mouth of a cave.

Not far away floated Aywin, Sapphirion, and Svetlana, all remaining above the cloying mists.

Team Fusion

Above him and to the West, Bjorn and Terrin held the rope that Copper had descended upon, while Lorent crouched, listening to Psychic communication that had intruded into his familiar's link.

Stryke offered to either go next on the rope, or to hold it while one of the others went. Bill looked to Bjorn to see if he should scuttle on down the rope, or remain here. Loklafd lay, one-legged and wheezing from having breathed the mists after plunging into the water below. He was in no shape to descend, but he could anchor the rope with Stryke, if the others wanted to climb down.

"I don't see 'em down here, I think we gotta go into the cave."
Copper shouts back up, hoping someone will listen.

Shade-9 could feel the fog clinging to his body and beginning to eat at the exposed chassis. Not enough to compromise his performance though and as Chomylla pulled back to her battle of wills with the dracolich, the Warforged infiltrator moved, tactical heuristics analysing data and assessing optimal trajectories.

The other members of the team were assembling, Copper at the top of the Spire, the familiars forming a aerial vanguard and the remnant of Team Fusion above the gorge.

"beware the fog" he warned Copper, before moving towards the giant theif while remaining focussed on the distant cave entrance "we have need to reach the light there, but the dracolich is aware of our presence - expect hostile interference"
