A Backrooms Setting

With there being some obvious interest in the Backrooms, I thought a thread about using them as part of a setting might interest folks. There are already posts about other liminal spaces (like The Stygian Library and The Gardens of Ynn) and how they could be an interesting transitive plane.

The possibilities, of course, are as endless as the Backrooms themselves (if they are endless anyway) and could be crossed with the SCP. The main drawback is that both have a more "modern" feel to them rather than the usual Medievalish Fantasy that is more typical of D&D, but it's possible this could be worked around, as seen in the Stygian Library and Gardens of Ynn; there's really nothing preventing some Order (even something like the Men in Black) from creating something like the SCP to hold strange entities and artifacts.

On the other hand, a more modern setting isn't necessarily a bad thing. Lovecraftian elements can certainly be mixed in, and a sort of Steampunk setting (incorporating Victorian elements akin to Wild Wild West or Girl Genius) allows for more sci-fantasy elements.

I think this could be a topic people could enjoy with a lot of potential. At least, I hope so.

For myself? I'm honestly not into horror. At all. I think it's largely because I can just look at real life and see so many horrific things being done that I just am done with everything being awful. I crave settings that are more hopeful than cynical, that provide ways to make the world a better place rather than saying nothing can ever be better. I might be in the minority in this, or it might be better to create a thread for Solarpunk. It's just, I would hope someone finds some way to include something silly, whimsical, helpful, or friendly into all this.

I suposse we are talking about the subgenres of new-weird fiction and analogic horror.

They key is it can't be explained easily or it would lose the thriller vibes.

The new game "Curseborn" by Onyx Path drinks some ideas of new weird.

Including, I might add, saying that for normal people (rather than the supernatural PCs the game is built around), staying the heck out is a Really Good Idea. (Its fraught even for those supernaturals).

All I know of Backrooms is the trailers and a little online discussion of it.

I think one of the pieces that got me into this type of story was Mark Danielewski’s House of Leaves. I was inspired to use it in a D&D game- very disorienting for the players.

There was also a videogame playthrough I watched on YT that was ever shifting and non-Euclidean. Can’t remember the name, though.

EDIT: The “My House” mod/tribute for Doom II:

I can easily see an Escher-esque labyrinth designed to contain some kind of great evil. I could also see one as being a once former maze or keep that got “infected” by elemental Chaos.

Hm. So, you want the Backrooms to be more easygoing and whimsical, OP?

That’s one heck of a do over. It’s essentially an unsettling, surreal survival horror setting, furthermore with survival being pretty slim odds, generally speaking.

What aspects might you be thinking of keeping, if not [what I see as] its core?
