Thanks for the verification, guys. :) I suppose it was my initial take of the class as an alt.cleric, that led me to be so surprised by some of the changes. I was at least looking for the class writeup to address some of the core differences between the Favored Soul vs. Cleric, but when I found nothing I started to wonder if there was a Heavy Crossbow Precedent somewhere. :p I haven't discussed her reasoning with her in detail, but I do believe a good part of the appeal for the player is the more martial nature of the class (Weapon proficiency, Focus, and eventually Specialization) combined with a kind of spellcasting that requires less research. You know your spells, you know how many charges of each spell level you get, no fuss. Looking at the Favored Soul in detail, I think it makes a fair melee-cleric. You get some free martial feats, an extra slot or two to use for buffs, etc. etc. My main concern is that this character will still be the group's primary healer, and forcing her to lose one Known Spell per level to gain spontaneous healing seems to severely restrict the class's spell options. So I'm considering just adding the Cure spells to the Favored Soul's Known Spells list as a bonus. Then the PC can use her Known Spells earned through leveling to focus on buffs and the occasional blast spell or status effect removal spell. Thoughts?
