A "Shadowdark" For High Fantasy Adventure

To be clear, I am not saying classes should have random abilities like in Shadowdark for this theoretical game. But you can't really pile on a bunch of player options and still call it "lean."

While everyone will have their own line for what lean is, whats yours?

Everything you need to know to play your character fits on one single sided 8.5x11 or smaller is a good metric, I think.
Does 2e qualify or does it need to be a trimmed down 5e?

If trimmed 5e, then Nimble, if 2e then maybe Land of Eem or Vagabond. Both are more oldschool than Nimble but less dungeoncrawl than Shadowdark

Land of Eem is kinda the OSR Daggerheart, Vagabond is more a modernized 1e/2e

Yup, I’d agree that both these games are worth looking at for this.

And just to be clear, I mean EVERYTHING. As in your character rules AND the game rules relevant to play.
Yes, I assumed you meant that. It’s a tough ask but it’s doable. I was thinking about this for Fabula Ultima (not that it really fits in this discussion since it’s not D&D based) and yes, that would work for most characters.

I am strongly considering using FU for my portal fantasy. I need to find a decent Actual Play to see.
