A spell for you.....

A player in my game has recently come to me with a spell that in the begining as I usually do said fine to but now I have some reservation about balance issues.

The spell comes from some Ultimate Book of Spells resource, honestly I don't know the name but the basics are:

It is a 3rd level divine spell, called like mantle of flame or something.

What it does is mask the caster in a wreath of flame that does 3d6 hp of damage to any weapon used to stike at him.

I don't think it applies to magic weapons, but it seems like a very powerful spell of 3rd level, its basically a spell that makes one invulnerable to regular weapons since most common weapons don't survive.

I hate to go back on something I've OK'ed but I am considering it at this time. I am curious what level you all think it should be and what you think of it. I think it's going to be bad for the character in the long run becasue it'll tempt me to stop attacking him with normal melee troops and subject him to the only form of attack left - spells. I think at some point during any fight the enemy is going to figure out that he's burning up the regular weapons and let him have it with spells and such.

Anyway, just looking for thoughts....

It doesn't make him invulnerable. He still takes the damage. But the weapon that hit him might be destroyed.

When magic weapons the group wants starts getting destroyed- the spell will come under serious reconsideration. :)
