A Star Wars Gaming General Thread

Does anyone have any sources on what the Clone Wars were supposed to be or thought to be prior to the prequels coming out? Were there any EU stories set then? Or details from novelizations or comics? Part of me thinks it might be fun to go back and rewrite history as a campaign.

Prior to the prequels, the EU was specifically not allowed to make content about the Clone Wars. It was something Lucas intentionally held out of the hands of third parties, ostensibly with the long term goal of the prequel trilogy. A few small bits made it through, but even that was largely in the realm of tech (like Juggernauts, Dreadnoughts, Z-95 Headhunters, etc.) and not stories.

There are a few books that include stories/legends of centuries before the Clone Wars. "Han Solo and the Lost Legacy" and "Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu" both include legends and history that predate the Clone Wars by quite a lot. Notably, both are very early additions to the EU (1980 and 1983 respectively), and both take place in the outer rim with no real notable information about the Old Republic.

I think my love of FFGSW is well-stated at this point, and would be my first and last choice of system for the setting.

The longest campaign I was in started with us as Outer Rim scum who eventually became privateers for the Rebellion. I also played in a Sith Academy game using Star Wars d20 (I forget if it was Revised or Saga), which was enjoyable.

Like @dbm, the Old Republic Era would be my choice of time period - technology has largely stagnated, so it's still recognisably Star Wars, but there's more Jedi, more Sith, more Mandalorians, just more everything that makes it more gameable.

I'm fond of FFG 's version
Given your previous stated gaming preferences, I'm genuinely both surprised and pleased by this.

But nowadays my favourite version is the FFG one, which I started playing way back before release, with the Beta book with dice stickers (which came with the book!) and it was love at first sight play.

With the cloning cylinders from the Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy, I thought there were some implications about the Clone Wars technology and period - but it's not all that detailed.

FFG's game is both lore and mechanics-heavy, both of which are my preference, and I live the huge amount of available content, both official and otherwise. I also like the idea of the dice rules, but to be fair I've never played. The only Star Wars RPG I've ever actually played was WEG, but I've read them all.

We played a tonne of WEG Star Wars back in the day, with our main characters going through three movies and three TV specials worth of material, all culminating in a grand set piece showdown against the antagonist from the very first adventure that was both highly entertaining and very satisfying. It is one of my favourite gaming stories to relate to this day! (And it includes one of the best die rolls I've ever made.)

More recently (albeit a decade+ ago now), my then gaming group gave FFG's SW a try. While I was absolutely excited about what I'd heard about it, in the end we bounced off it so dang hard (for numerous reasons). Fortunately, the campaign ended once again on an absolute high note that included the narrative-injection (through spending Force points) introduction of an NPC that was just pitch perfect and saved the player's behinds. (I was the GM for this game.)

Afterwards I ran a one shot or two of WEG SW to introduce the group to it, and they very much enjoyed it.

As the pandemic got underway I fired up a Dawn of Defiance Campaign, starting with some (non-related) introductory adventures. It was also to be a playtest for a new ruleset I was designing. It went very well, enough so that one of the players also wanted to try their hand at running SW using the system, so they fired up a campaign in the Galactic Republic - Sith Empire Cold War era. It too went great!

We tend to play many games in our group, so we put the SW campaigns to the side to fire up other campaigns and now it's been a couple of years since we've played either of them, alas. (Crazily, we’re mid-adventure in the DoD campaign, so the characters have kinda been left hanging…)

While naturally I enjoy my system for running SW (which also acknowledges the d6 system as one of its many influences), I think SW would also work fabulously well using Cortex Prime (which finally available on DTRPG, hooray!). With the exception of the Cold War campaign, all the SW playing has been in that spot of a few decades BBY to decades ABY. It’s comfortable, familiar, no issues at all would happily play there again. That said, that little taste of that Cold War era also has me hungering to play more in that era, exploring the galactic and political makeup of that time as well as the different position the Jedi / Sith occupy during the era.

An idea is slowly forming: a Rebellion game where the only Canon is A New Hope EXCEPT that when the first Death Star went up, Luke, Vader and the Millennium Falcon were caught in the blast. I.E. the only major character remaining is (a deeply damaged) Leia, and the war for freedom continues. Thoughts?
IMO it feels less like Star Wars if you kill off the bigger characters. What exactly are you getting out of the setting?
