Advancing creatures, and a few other questions.

Ok, I've not tried this before, so I'm a little unsure how it works. A PC of mine has a giant raven for a cohort (from Silver Marshes; it's similar to a giant eagle) and it's bright enough to take levels in a character class. Actually, I get to give it two levels in any appropriate class, and I'm not sure how exactly to go about doing that. I can calculate racial stat mods, etc, but how does BAB and the like work for it?

[Edit] Oh, I also would like to make it a few custom magic items - how would one go about pricing a magic item (worn) that increases the flight type of the wearer? Ravens have a flying type of Poor, and I'd like to increase that; I can see enchanted wingbands that would bump it up to Average or even Good, but I've no idea how to stat it.

BAB and class characteristics would progress as with any character, and would stack with the base creature. Look at the "Monsters as Races" section in the DMG (p22 I think), and take a peek at the MM.

Of course, it probably can't be a caster (because of the components).

You may also ask your DM to add a template to it, with an ECL of +2. Something like Axiomatic, which would give it energy resistances etc. Look at the MM and MoP.

As for the item, good question, depends on the DM. Look for a similar item. Size does not matter for pricing.

There is a feat called Improved Flight from MoW which does what you describe.

Ok - I wasn't sure if it's base BAB stacks with any character classes, though I thought so. It's the equivalent of a sixth-level character, and I get an 8th level cohort, so thus the two levels I get to give it - and I think I prefer letting it advance in levels over dropping a template on it.
As for the magic item, it wasn't size I was unsure about - just stating the item itself. The DMG rules are (of course) just a bit vague there, and I was hoping some people had suggestions. On the other hand, if there's a feat, I'll be fine. Thanks!
