Ambus ability question

Hi! I just received Song and Silence as a gift. Reviewing the Prestige Classes, there is one called Outlaw of the Crimson Road. I was thinking of springing one of these on the group in DM for as a recurring NPC. However, I am confused by the Ambush ability. Can someone explain this ability clearer. How is it different from a Rogue's normal Sneak attack ability?

IIRC, Ambush only works in the surprse round, it does not trigger when flanking or invisible.

I concur with J. McM. There seem to be quite a lot of "pseudo-sneak-attack" abilities going around. This would better go in a new thread, but I wonder if it's possible to make a 20th level character who will have the possibility (probably in some very limited circumstances) of making an attack that will deal +20d6 "pseudo-sneak-attack" damage...
