An idea: no feats

Probably this is just a dream, but I'd love to see them go away. While the idea was cool in the beginning of 3E, I now deem them responsible for much of the power creep that followed. They've been in the center of the "arms race" mentality for a long time now, and class talents in Star Wars Saga are just a better mechanic, in my opinion, built under a similar idea of allowing a chance for class customization.

I have a problem with feats less on the "power creep" end and more on the "option overload" end. Also, in 4e, they don't occupy a clear design space of their own.

I don't really have an issue with feats. Yeah, I think it is silly how they continually keep adding to them, but I like the customization it affords.

I'm not sure how class talents would differ much in the long term if they were to be adopted. What stops them from simply adding more talent options for each class as they release more source books? It wouldn't take much to have talent overload which we see with feats today.

I don't consider them necessary.

They could pretty easily be replaced with something else that affords less room for power creep while retaining customization. For example, class specific "talent trees" filled with class features.

Feats were a good idea back when classes were fairly static and there wasn't a lot of customization, but as more and more customization options were introduced to classes themselves Feats lost a lot of their purpose. They also suffered a lot from introducing a lot of small bonuses that tended to be harder to track than they were worth...

I'll certainly agree that Feats, as they've been implemented in 3E and 4E, don't really need to come back. If they were replaced with some system that presented a smaller number of more meaningful choices it would probably be a big improvement, but I'd probably be happier with more class-related choices.

Feats of a equivalent could be good if they were close to a clear design goal. But right now they serve as bandaid for botched math, multiclass options, plain static bonuses and flavor additions with little mechanical importance, when not sinergizing creating devastating combos.

They should choose one of the options and stick to it, or basically 95% of the feats are completely useless and won't even be touched by anyone who doesn't want to be mechanically gimped.

Perhaps feats should simply be replaced with talents built in the class as per d20 Modern that allow you a way to customize your class options within class limitations?
