Anyone got Craft rules?

By the current rules, character can create an undefined number of quarterstaffs in any amount of time.

Then there's the fact that prices do not necessarily reflect labor (despite any Marxist inclinations people might have).

So, has anyone come up with more sensible craft rules? Even going by the values in the PHB, it seems to take an awfully long time to make some pretty mundane things.

Well if you look at it from a rules point of view, a quarterstaff is nothing more than a limb from a tree. So depending on how many trees are in the area depends on how many quarterstaffs you can come up with.

According to the PHB, IIRC, all prices include any usual labor necisssary. I say usual because players can always come up with unusal things they want.

At low levels yes, mundane items are going to take a while. I neophyte smith can't crafting nearly as well or as quick as a Master. My character, Datt, has a total of 19 to weaponsmithing, that includes racial mod and masterwork tools. He can create a non-masterwork battle axe in 2 days. To me that is not really a long time. Now the masterwork axe I am building right now is taking him 6 weeks. But that is because of the cost of the masterwork portion.

I suggest just winging the duration of the crafting process. An average axe in two days for a master smith (I consider +19 to be pretty darn good) is absolutely out of the question. 6 weeks? What the hell are you going to do during thiose six weeks? It's a lump of metal worked into a very fine edge. After a week, that should be finished really. (Masterwork) full plate can take longer to craft in game time than most campaigns last! Three months, six months even, okay. But it might very well take longer.
