In the Ardent Vow description it says:

In addition, whenever you attack the target before the end of the encounter, it is subject to your divine sanction until the end of your next turn.

Does that mean from that point on and for the rest of the encounter that when you attack the target that you used Ardent Vow against, whether you hit with it or not, you Divine Sanction that target?

Or does it just mean for the next attack you do against that target after doing the Ardent Vow? Or does it mean you Divine Sanction the target with the same action as the Ardent Vow?

That's how it reads to me.

Condition: You attack the target before the end of the encounter.
Result: Target is subject to Divine Sanction until the end of your next turn.

Whenever that condition is met, as many times as it is met, the result applies.

Yep, it's potentially pretty cool, though it has gotten me in trouble once when I really wanted someone else to be marking until I no longer had 3 hp :)
