3 questions:

1. Where does it say that an awakened animal can now take class levels?

2. What is the minimum intelligence neccessary for this kind of advancement.

3. Why couldn't a Paladin's Companion (or other creatures... like wizards familiar, etc...) take class levels....

1. Any creature with an Int above 3 can have class levels.

2. Int 3.

3. The enhanced Int of these creature have is only by virtue of being Mounts or Familiars, the base animal does not have high enough Int score. Simply put, these creatures loose the increased Int score if they ever are dismissed as Mounts or Familiars, and you cannot have class level based on a non-permanent Int score.

1. Any monster can have Class levels (it is considered a Multiclass)

2. I'd say 3

3. They can but they already have favoured Class 'Paladins Mount/Familiar/etc

so can you cast awakened animal on a familiar, paladin's mount, etc...

thereby giving it the ability to take class levels?

I would think that in order for this to work the Character in Question would have to take the leadership feat and the creature would be multi-class...

1st level familiar/mount/etc....
next level fighter or whatever......

with the ability to switch back to familiar/mount/etc....

No, since they are magical beasts as long as they are mounts/familiars, they are not legitemate targets of the spell!

But you could improve the int of the animal with wish spells to 3 permanently. Could they take class lvls then?

Yes, but they would no longer qualify as mounts/familiars, since they are then considered magical beasts (for this purpose, anyway).

They would however qualify for improved familiar/mounts.
