Bag of Holding In AM Field

Numion

First Post
Background: to ease transport we put one or two characters into a bag of holding and then teleport.

Now what if a Beholder puts the character carrying the bag in his AM field, what happens to the dudes in the bag? Do they disappear? Is the bag ruined?

Opinions, please!

The portal the bag contains to extradimensional space is temporarily shut down. The bag is still empty, the stuff is still in the extradimensional space, but the link between the two is turned off until the AM field passes.

Or at least that's my opinion. Transporting people in a bag of holding is hazardous to your health in any case. Or was it lethal? I don't remember... I know portable holes work for a limited time, but I seem to remember bags of holding having more strict rules.

It has to be a pretty big bag for the characters to be able to get into it without splitting the sides.

The bag of holding looks like exactly that, a bag. If something can not fit through the openning in the bag, then it doesn't fit in the bag. This would include putting people in the bag.

I think Jeremy has it right - the items are in an extradimensional space, Antimagic Field has no effect on this space, only on the means used to access it.

Something like a Glove of Storing would be different, though - there, an item is shrunk to infinitely small size and put in stasis, so in an AM field it'd pop back to normal size.

Bret: The bag of holding is usually 2' by 4', so it has an opening circumference of 4' - enough to fit any except the most stocky Medium size characters through it.

If it has a circumference of 4', than the opening has a diameter of 1 feet, 4 inches, ergo, quite small for medium characters to pass thru.

My players have more than once used reduce in order to fit a member inside a bag of holding (usually a dead one).

Thats a good answer. More sensible than "people would disappear", I guess. And if they did disappear, same would go for all the stuff in it, so no one would really use bags of holding...

If they're dead, why bother with reduce? Just hack the body into little pieces and stick them in. Raise Dead (or other such spells) will put them back together again. :D

Raise Dead won't put them back together again, but Resurrection and True Resurrection will.

Raise Dead requires the body to be whole. You need Resurrection or better if any important parts have been separated.
