Wizards of the Coast is returning to Baldur’s Gate. PC Gamer reports that Wizards of the Coast is developing remakes of Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2, with Kevin Martens leading development. Martens was the co-lead designer of Baldur’s Gate 2 and most recently was assisting in the development of Exodus, Wizards’ upcoming AAA video game.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a major success for Wizards of the Coast and a sequel game seems inevitable. However, Larian Studios opted to leave the franchise to pursue its own IP, and Wizards has yet to announce what studio, whether internal or external, would take over. A remake of the first two Baldur’s Gate games would likely be a stopgap of sorts to keep fans interested in the franchise while lining up Baldur’s Gate 4, although a lot of work would be needed to update the games for modern consoles and PCs. Remastered versions were already released for iOS and PC a decade ago.

What's a faithful reproduction? I'm thinking of something like the Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho in 1998 which was pretty much a shot-for-shot recreation of the original 1960 classic. Nobody but Gus Van Sant wanted that.

Line by line, quest by quest, zone by zone, zero changes.

A UI and graphical update, nothing more. Heck, I demand every voice line remains untouched.

I think what you're after is a remaster, like the enhanced editions. Remakes are typically much more extensive and, in this case, will probably be 5.5 edition rules. I wouldn't be surprised if they have the bastion rules for the class strongholds.

If it's remade to be turn-based and 5e, I'll get it. If it's RTwP, I'll skip it altogether like I did when they were originally released.

It leaves a big gap right at the beginning of Baldur's Gate II. I'm sure they will be replaced with something non-offensive, like lame ducks.
I don’t think it’ll be a problem. WotC doesn’t seem overly concerned with completely sanitizing their games of anything that might cause offense to someone somewhere. Baldir’s Gate 3 had slavery and tons of other “problematic” content and I don’t remember any serious controversy.

I could never get into the Real time with pause games back in the day and I have tried the Enhanced Editions since so, if the remake is not turn based I am not playing it.
Otherwise I would love to see those games remade.
