Bard: Music Instrument Implement

Just a short question: Do you need to have magic Instruments in a Hand to use them or do you let them play (use) just with your mind?

I think it is not written somewhere that you have to play the instrument... same with the pactdagger... You channel energy through it for ranged attacks.

Implements need to be wielded generally in order to function. PHB2 p209 general rules for musical instruments says "you must be holding and playing the instrument as appropriate" to use its properties and powers. Since implement use of any instrument is a property of that instrument you would have to be playing it to use it as an implement by RAW.
