Yep, I've been sucked in, and that was even before I realized that the Salem where the original events took place was the Salem near me. Everyone in this situation did a lot of stupid things, but Bricks and Minifigs corporate, the "villain" franchisees, and the American Fork Utah police department all misbehaved in so many over the top ways that even accounting for the biased reporting its hard to see how they aren't extremely in the wrong.
Bricks and Minifigs has already decisively lost in the court of public opinion which is probably the court that actually matters for a retail business. Would that it mattered as much for that local Utah police department who will presumably collectively suffer no repercussions other than embarrassment and whose individual offenders will probably suffer nothing beyond the paid administrative leave that seems to be the worst consequence most American police officers ever face..
If the company goes under because of this I'm certainly tempted to say good riddance. I first became aware of them as what I thought was a one off location at a local mall I frequent that I had mentally tagged as "the nasty Lego store", because their shop was full of stern and aggressive signs threatening against shoplifting, photographing (I think) or letting unattended children visit their toy store, all to a level I have never seen at any other retail store in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. It just seemed way out of step with the local business culture, but I assumed it was just a fluke of a toy store run by someone who hated children and no doubt insisted their wares were "collectables". I only became aware it was a franchise chain last Winter when there was a different YouTube controversy, where a creator filmed himself getting various levels of low-ball offer on some valuable minifigs from several locations well below the company's stated guidllines of paying 50% of retail (or even the later claim that they pay 30-50%), with employees always seeming to not notice the actually valuable items among the things they were appraising. It just seems like a bad business through and through, though since it is a franchise model it's certainly entirely possible that there are Galants to go with these Goofuses.

tbh just seems to me that no one else with big collections in legos will be going to that store or to bricks and minifigs in general. i know its huge, the controversy and all, but it also seems like this is something that will be forgotten about in a couple months (if it all really ends here.)

That's okay, I didn't realize what a minifig was until I googled it. And then I felt foolish =X.I hadn’t heard of Bricks and Minifigs before so all I can say is that’s not how you want someone introduced to your company.
