Building the Hermit

First Post
Hello everyone,

Here's the thing. For my GM's birthday I decided to run a solo role-play campaign as he said he never got to play anymore. It's the first game I've ever run, so I've written up the scenario, fleshed out some NPCs and drawn up a map. I couldn't get all my prep done in time, however, and had to write up the main bad guys as I've gone along but now I've gotten around to it I can't decide what the main bad guy is (class wise, I mean).

Here's the setting so far. The local towns people have been menaced by a local Half-Orc warlord who steals pre-teen girls during raids on the town. What they don't know (and the player will learn) is that the warlord and his army report to someone else... and he is gearing them up for a full-scale war.

The one pulling the strings of the entire thing is an old man only known as the Hermit. His base of operations is an entire underground labyrinth built under his hut in the woods. The young girls are presented to him for his pleasure (yes, he's pretty sick. That's why the player is there).

I've already decided I want him to be a Lvl 10 Wizard, but what I can't decide is what school/arch-type I want him to be. I think Enchantment, Illusion or Seige Wizard, but I can't decide between the three.

I'd usually pose these questions to my usual GM but, of course, I can't so I'm pose them to you guys instead.

Help please?

Enchantment/Manipulator seems pretty typical. I'd also consider making him a Witch if you're looking for some flavour. Just remember that, unless your Hero is also making a spellcaster, your Big Bad is a bucket of low hit points waiting to be hacked apart.

Random thought. Make the Hermit a creator-type of wizard (so I guess Enchantment) who specializes in golems... and have the maze be a subterranean garden to display his work. Of course, once he's done with his girls, they could make fantastic material for Flesh golems...

The player is playing a wizard himself, so that's ok. The way I thought it up in my head was that the orc warlord was raised by the Hermit or was given his seat of power by him, which explains why he allows himself to be bossed around by a little old man. Perhaps a case of wanting to impress "daddy".

An Enchanter does seem like a good way to go, and I like the idea of the golems. It would be easy to convert some of the upper rooms into gardens for that purpose. Thanks for the idea, Herobizkit!

The guy is a major pedo, so an enchanter would make even more sense seeing at his age he'd have to make them do all the work... this is not a kid friendly story, obviously.

Enchanter it is! Thanks for your help guys!

Just keep in mind since your PC is a wizard that Golems are immune to any magic that allows SR except for very specific spells listed in their descriptions

If you're wizard doesn't have any clues and goes in there with normal SR allowing spells, he'll get flattened pretty quickly.
