Changing weapon size and keeping feats for weapon?

Drasmir

First Post
In the d20 sys reference docs it states that you can change a weapon's size and change the damage associated with it. In my campaign I have a fighter type who uses TWF and Ambidex with two bladed gaunts (small size). Would it be possible to increase the size of one to medium and keep the exotic weapon proficiency for both (since I only took it once for both as a small weapon)?

My character is human so this would be great to increase possible damage.

What do you think???

I would say no.

As by changing the size you are ether making the whole glove bigger and so it would not fit or making the blades longer and then you are now useing a long sword sized blade and that would be a different weapon.

If you change a martial weapons size I see no reason the martial weapon feat would not work but exotic weapons feat is persice.

I would say you need to take exotic feat for the new size weapon.

Why would I have to increase in size?

The only reason I ask is because I am a medium sized creature who can use a medium weapon in one hand (hence the increased size bladed gaunt) and a light weapon in the other hand (the original small bladed gaunt). This keeps my penalties down for TWF w/ Ambidex (-2, -2), but allows me to do possible additional damage.

While a small bladed gauntlet is a light weapon for you, a regular bladed gauntlet is not a light weapon at all. It is now a medium weapon, thus the mechanics of its use are far different.

Look at it like this. A regular size dagger that is increased by one size is now a shortsword. Both are piercing weapons. However, a regular size shortsword increased by one size is not a longsword. Their size is now the same. Their damage is now the same. Their crit range is the same. However, one is piercing and one is slashing. They aren't the same. In either of these cases, proficiency with a dagger won't help you with a dagger that is one size larger than normal. If your size didn't change, then the larger dagger is no longer a normal dagger to you.

To remain the same size relative to your weapon.

A differently-sized version of a weapon is treated as a different weapon under the rules. Changing the size changes the weight, the balance, the way it handles - all the things that are important about making a weapon unique. Therefore, the feats that are applied to one are not applied to the other.

Notice, for example, that a shortsword is exactly equivalent to a dagger increased to size S - and they use different versions of the above feats. You would need a separate EWP for the medium bladed gauntlet, separate WF, separate WS, etc.

You make a good argument with the dagger to shortsword comparison Kreynolds. I see the point, I just wish that it was documented in the rules (although I realize that not everything can be written down). It messes up my character, but I honestly figured this would be the response and if I was running the game, I'd play it just like you guys have said.

Thanks for the info... now I must go cry for my weak character

Because gauntlets are small sized for medium sized races.

A Oger uses medium sized gauntlets and so to use them you would need to be medium sized.

This is of cource if you make the whold thing bigger.

Other wise the blades are what changes and you still are useing a different weapon. (Shortsword sized blades vs. Longsword sized blades)

WOuld you allow a player (with only simple weapon profisency feat) to have a Club (medium sized simple weapon) made as a large weapon (which would be the same as a Greatclub a Martial weapon) beable to still use it with out the martial weapon feat?

No.

Wrathful Healing??? I'm not familiar. Can you give me a basic run-down of this.

I'm definately going keen and improved critical. It sucks, though, that they errated the 17-20 crit range and put it to 19-20. Basically that's a shortsword with locked gaunts. They should have at least made it 18-20 since I had to spend an exotic weapon feat to get them.
