Characters for a convention game - 4 backgrounds done

Cabe Zeree

First Post
Good day,

I'm hoping to run an Eberron adventure at an upcoming con, I think the pulp style and action possible in Eberron would make a great "one shot."

I have the adventure under control, but I'm having a little problem coming up with the characters, characters that say "Eberron." As a DM you leave the characters to the players, that's part of the fun, but for a con you need something more structured. So, I'm looking for a little help and inspiration: I need 6-8 characters at 6th or 7th level with suitable backgrounds and houses where appropriate.

The character list I've come up with:
Second Chance - Warforged Fighter from Thrane
Karin - Human Cleric from Thrane
Thinharath - Kalishtar Psion from Adar
Mina - Gnome Wizard from Zilargo
Unnamed - Dwarf Artificer from the Mror Holds
Shining Dawnlight - Shifter Ranger from the Eldeen Reaches
Tonn - Changeling Rogue from Sharn

I've got a few of the backgrounds written, but the others are being difficult. Any help, random thoughts, cool concepts that you'd love to play but never had a chance, or even characters you've played, would all be appreciated.

My thanks

I've had a couple of the characters "done" for a while. Perhaps you'll find them interesting.

Second Chance - Warforged Fighter from Thrane
The first thing warforged recalls is being drug from a battlefield by Karin ir'Zyfar , at the time a field medic, and young acolyte of Thrane. He was badly wounded - terribly mangled - the Thrane artificers felt he was a lost cause, but Karin couldn't seem him destroyed and spent a sizable amount of the money from her parent's estate to have him repaired. Second Chance, completely astounded why a stranger would react so, vowed to serve as her bodyguard for life, since she saved his life.

Thus, when Karin decided to travel to Xen'drik - to spread the truth of the Silver Flame, and uncover the dark continent's lost secrets - he was at her side. They faced giants, drow, dinosaurs, and more loathsome horrors, and Second Chance's sword never faltered.

Second Chance along with Thinharath helped keep the party together during their explorations of Xen'drik. While Thinharath kept people talking, the warforged took everyone's separate ideas and opinions and made plans that they all could agree to and follow. The former solder has a healthy respect for the psion because of his efforts.

Personality: Second Chance is intelligent, and though he's Karin's protector, he isn't her lackey and never refrains from offering his opinion and advice. The warforged's brush with death made him more contemplative and thoughtful than most of his kind and considers his actions before he commits, but if Karin was in danger he'd charge into a dragon's maw to save her.

Karin ir'Zyfar - Human Cleric - Thrane
Karin is the daughter of Ressic ir'Zyfar, a minor noble of Thrane. When she was 8 her father died in the Last War, then four years later her older brother died. Her mother had died years before her father, leaving her the sole heir of the ir'Zyfar line. Determined to make a difference, she joined the church to learn to heal and keep other people from dying so they could return to their families. Karin went off to the front where fate allowed her to save Second Chance in Thrane's final battle of the war. When asked why she did it, she smiles and says "she could do no less."

Karin then went deep into debt to repair the warforged - the war had left the ir'Zyfar's barely treading water. She kept the bill collectors away by selling off pieces of land here and there, but she had to come up with a lot more money, and that led her to do something more desperate. She convinced members of the Church of the Silver Flame to sponsor an expedition to Xen'drik to spread the truth of the light. She hired adventurers and used the expedition to hunt for treasure.

Then she found the pillar, partially buried in an empty clearing, and she knew her luck was turning around. Some of the money from the find and sale has to go to the Church, but she should still have plenty to get out of debt and save the family estate. Karin has kept her precarious state a complete secret, especially not Second Chance.

Personality: Karin is kind at heart, she wants to help, but she can be overbearing at times - she grew up a noble and spent time in the field as an officer. The time in the wilds of Xen'drik softened her nature, everyone had to get along to survive, but since she paid for the expedition she was still the leader. Now that they're back, the dynamics are changing - her "advice and guidance" isn't always welcomed.

Trasik - Half-Orc Druid from the Shadow Marches
Steeped in the Gatekeeper traditions of his tribe, Trasik had long heard stories about "bothers and sisters to the north" where trees grew so thick and tall they blocked out the sky. He needed to see for himself, so he made the dangerous journey alone to the Eldeen Reaches. He was welcomed by the Gatekeepers of the Reaches and learned of their ways, different from his ways but very similar. It was then that he met Shining Dawnlight, and his wanderlust found a companion.

He's not sure which of them brought up the idea of traveling to Xen'drik, but they both agreed. They headed for Sharn, they made their intentions known and it wasn't long before they met Karin.

They helped keep the party alive in the dangerous jungles, and when anyone gets cheeky, Trasik enjoys reminding the rest of the party about the time he or Shining Dawlinght saved them from the.... The two, already a good team before they reached Sharn, became even closer in the wilds of Xen'drik. However, they each have an independent streak, and the relationship is on-and-off again.

Personality:
Trasik is kind, but he is a free spirit with a competitive streak that can make him brash and impulsive. He offers his advice, and when the group doesn't agree he has a bad habit of doing what he wants anyway. Luckily Shining Dawnlight, Tonn, and even Mina or Thinharath are often close behind to help him out of trouble.

Thinharath - Kalishtar Psion from Adar
Thinharath is one of the many Kalishtar who want to oppose the Inspired and free his people. He took up fighting in one of the numerous ongoing guerrilla campaigns throughout Sarlona, and in one fated battle he nearly lost his life. Tenacious, he crawled away into solitary hiding, and through his power eventually recovered enough to reach home. The encounter taught him that, if he wanted to stay alive and truly help his people, he needed to grow stronger and hone his talents.

Thinharath came to Khorvare because of the opportunity he kept hearing about. He arrived in Sharn, discussed his options with the small Kalishtar population. Many warned him against his course, but many also said they understood his desire, and one of them put him in touch with a band of "adventurers" headed for Xen'drik. Thinharath embraced the chance, not only would it provide him the experience he needed, but he hoped to forge friendships with the group and convince them to return to Adar and help his people.

Used to working and living in small groups in his homeland, Xen'drik was nothing new, and Thinharath often worked to diffuse arguments, alleviate tension, and assuage grudges. He and Second Chance were predominantly responsible for keeping the 8 working together as a friendly team.

Personality:
Thinharath is a people person and he worked hard to forge friendships amongst the seven. Initially it was out of a sense of self preservation - he had to keep the group together - and because he hoped to eventually convince some to come back to Adar, but ultimately he came to like the seven because of who they are. He enjoys deep discussions and bantering, but he's also quite willing to help his friends in battle, and he'll shout encouragement whenever he can.
