Comic Book: The Movie

I know this is not a new movie, but I only saw it for the first time last night and I'm compelled to give it a big plug today.

If you haven't seen this, it's a mock documentary about a comic book fan who's called in by a Hollywood studio to give fan credibility to the studio's resurrection of a classic character -- Captain Courage. Mark Hamill, who also directed it, stars as Don Swan, the Captain Courage expert who's disgruntled that the studio wants to turn his beloved 1940s hero into a modern-day terrorist-killing machine. Much of it was filmed at Comic-Con and features an endless array of cameos from comic creators and other stars who played along.

I have a newfound respect for Hamill today. I had no idea he had been doing just a huge amount of cartoon voice work over the years since Star Wars, or that he was such a genuine comic book fan.

His recreation of the politics of fandom was dead-on and absolutely hysterical!

I think it was a special feature but when they have all the voices from other cartoons come on that is funny stuff. They guy that does the voice of Brain from Pinky and the Brain is very funny.

Hmm, I might have to check this movie out. I loved the way Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back took jabs at over-opinionated internet movie geeks, and if Comic Book: The Movie does the same with comic fans, I just might like it.

im gonna have to disagree

this movie was TERRIBLE

worse that that really. GRUSOME? APPALLING? ABYSMAL?

it isnt a documentary about comic fandom at all, nor is it an actual movie with a plot. its a quasi-hybrid mess that just winds up being a giant self congratulatory pat on the back to voice actors while being a big kick in the rear to anyone seeking entertainment.

All of the actors proved in this "film" why they are just voice actors.
the reason this movie hasnt gotten a lot of talk is because all of its immediate fanbase, such as myself, watched it right away hoping it would be good, and were sooo disappointed with it that it wasnt worth even talking about.

indeed, the best part of this DVD is the one extra on disc 2 which is just a comic-con panel with all the voice actors as themselves.

but the supposed story is that hamill didnt want to do any sort of documentary that would lead people to make fun of comic fans.
what a maroon
he really really missed the boat with this.

I guess it's actually a fictional movie about the making of a documentary. I'll admit it was occasionally hard to follow whether the action was supposed to be part of the would-be documentary or part of the movie or something else. But that didn't make it less funny to me.

As for the voice actors, I had no idea any of these people were voice actors until I looked at the bios after watching the movie. And, having got only disk 1 from Netflix, I didn't even see the panel feature you're talking about.

Oh well. One man's treasure, another man's trash.

the panel mentioned is on the 2nd disc. which netflix also has, cuz thats how i saw it too :-P (im the guy who somtimes rents the extra discs from netflix)

and its not just that it was BAD, it was that hamill made such a big deal about what a fan he is and how he was gonna do this RIGHT and not insult anyone, and i found portions of this much more insulting to geekdom than trekkies or any other documentary or movie about geekdom. so his over-hype or something so truly awful made it an even more bitter pill to swallow.

I liked it too. But not that much that I would buy it. I rented it from a local independant video store.

I liked the cameos like Matt Greoning.
