Crafting Wonderous Items question

First Post
Here's the puzzle we've run into... I can't seem to find any information on this.

Is there anything that prevents you from making a "cloak of charisma" into a "ring of charisma"? Namely, can you make an item like a cloak of charisma, only have it be a ring?

If so (and I'm assuming you CAN do it) the more important issue is what is the cost? Does it cost more gold to put modifiers on certain types of items? If you forged a "ring of charisma" would it cost anything different than a "cloak of charisma", just because it is a ring?

Thanks for any help!

Making a ring of charisma +6 (or whatever) would cost the same as a cloak of charisma. It would require the Forge Ring feat, not the Craft Wondrous Item feat, however. You could also make a hat of charisma or underpants of charisma, and they would all cost the same. (Assuming the underpants of charisma take up the belt slot.)

I don't think there's anything wrong with interchangeable slots. So you could have an amulet of Charisma, or a vest of Strength, or a ring of resistance, or whatever. The item pricing formulas certainly don't make any distinction between different slot locations. The only thing limiting you is plausibility; eg while an amulet of Wisdom might make sense, it's a bit harder to wrap one's head around the idea of boots of Intelligence.

Dcollins will be here shortly with his recorded "nothing in the core rules allows it" message, but feel free to ignore him.

Agreed. I hope they fix the Item creation feats in 3.5, because the way it currently stands there really isn't any need to take anything other than Craft Wonderous Items (unless, you don't allow items other than in the DMG).

This is what I suspected.

One of our party member has a cloak of charisma, but really wants a cloak of resistance too, and was wondering if there's any reason he couldn't just pay a local wizard to create a "ring of resistance" so he can wear both at the same time.

SO basically in terms of what part of the body wonderous items take up... it's pretty much completely arbitrary, except for as what was said before.... it would seem a little odd having boots of intelligence or a cloak of constitution... we just have kindof preconceived notions of where certain magical enhancements "should" go.

Nothing in the rules stops you from changing an item type. The DM must approve nonstandard items, of course, but that's true all the time.

It's most straightforward when you're just changing the cosmetics or slot of an item, but not its type. For instance, my sorcerer PC just crafted a +4 helm of charisma for his paladin buddy. It's exactly like a +4 cloak of charisma, and it's still a wondrous item, but it takes up the helmet slot. Easy.

If you want to make it another type of item, I think you need both the feat for the item type you want, as well as the feat for the original version. That is, if you want a +4 ring of charisma, you need both Forge Ring and Craft Wondrous Item. That prevents you from taking just one item creation feat, and suddenly having access to every item in the book. (I'm not 100% sure that this is correct though.)

I would assume you'd only need the "Forge Ring" ability if you wanted to make a ring of charisma. It should just depend on what sort of item you were enchanting. It just so happens the the DMG decides rings don't fall under "Wonderous Items"... they're their own thing.

I guess about the only thing you COULDN'T enchant in such a way would be weapons or armor... I don't know how you'd figure out how a +2 charisma bonus would affect the enhancement bonus of a weapon. You don't have to worry about it with wonderous items or rings though.
