D&D "Telephone"

Lucius Foxhound

First Post
A bunch of my party members will soon have castles and keeps of their own spread throughout the Forgotten Realms. We were trying to figure out a way for us to keep in contact with each other if need be.. sort of like telephones.

Are there any spells or magic items that could accomplish this? I thought of Extended Whispering Wind spells... but that's about it.

Thanks!

Clairaudience/Clairvoyance. Write stuff on blackboards and arrange to view the other castle's message board every so often. Alternatively, use them to video conference for a few minutes.

There's the Crystal Ball with Telepathy, but its 71000gp and would require using the Scry skill (may be a problem or not).

Custom wise, I think a Ring of Sending would be reasonable at 30000-40000gp (command word activated). Maybe even a little cheaper (it does only allow 25 words at a time).

From the SRD:

Ring Gates

These always come in pairs-two iron rings, each about 14 inches in diameter. The rings must be within 100 miles of each other to function. Whatever is put through one ring comes out the other, and up to 100 pounds of material can be transferred each day. (Objects only partially pushed through do not count.) This useful device allows for instantaneous transport of items, messages, and even attacks. A character can reach through to grab things near the other ring, or even stab a weapon through if so desired. Alternatively, a character could stick his head through to look around. A spellcaster could even cast a spell through a ring gate. A Small character can make an Escape Artist check (DC 13) to slip through. Creatures of Tiny, Diminutive, or Fine size can pass through easily. Each ring has a “entry side” and an “exit side,” both marked with appropriate symbols.

Caster Level: 17th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, gate; Market Price: 40,000 gp; Weight: 1 lb. each.

Each castle would require two sets of Ring Gates for two-way communication. One of each set would link to it's twin between a central "operations room" which was always manned and a castle communications room and vice-versa.

The "operator" would relay that communication was wanted. For mass conferences, everyone sticks their heads through (into the same room) and talks.

I guess it would look like some kind of demented Whack-A-Mole game, but it would work. :)

Does anyone in your group have craft portal? Highly recommended, especially in this case. Defensive capabilities of the fortresses are multiplied, imagine one keep is attacked and forces from ALL keeps defend, hehe.

A couple rings of sending for the PCs and somekind of sending statue or random device in the keep for conversation between keeps. Sound like fun, might want to just hire a wizard of "communications", a follower, or a really safe cohort perhaps could fullfill such a function.

Carrier pigeons :)

Not magical and slower but they only cost chicken feed.

IceBear

Or make custom pigeon boots of sprinting and striding to make them twice as fast. Or just expeadiant retreat boots for a little less cost.
