Daggerheart Discussion

The generalized consensus is if you want to play within the balance intentions of the core game, don't mess with the "left" side Domain - the one that the HP/stats were kinda balanced off. The second can be tweaked.
What?

How can it be balanced with the "left" side domain? There is no difference between the domains. You can choose 0 abilities from the "left" if you want.

When we look at it mathematically:

If you get "bad stats" because you get a good Left domain, then what is with the person who gets this domain as the right?

The only thing is that some domain have some some abilities which are based on a specific stat not the spellcasting stat, which is a bad design to begin with, since these cards are normally useless or at lesst suboptimal for the other class sharing the domain. But you dont have to choose them to begin with and if you choose your domain if you choose ones which dont fit thats on you.

Bro, go read the Homebrew Kit and look at the designer's intents and how they did the classes and get back to me. The "left" domain (eg: Codex -> X) is how they assigned stats.

Yeah and even if designers failed their middle school math class and make wrong assumptions it does not change the fact that classes cannot be mathematically balanced based on the left domain since its symmetric.

I guess they had initially something else planned (like left domain gives specific special affect on top), similar to how top abilities in races has a higher power budger than the lower one.

But with how it ended up, there is no difference between left and right. The left one is linked with the main stat to the class main stat (although 2 classes dont have this...). And the class main stat is linked in some degree to defenses. (Agi more evasion str mire health etc.) But since the main stat (except for 2 classes) is linked to the class itself thats enough the domain is not needed.

My purpose is to see if you can build a classless and/or talent tree system for PCs. I like the core class system much less than I like the game mechanics overall.

If you want to do this, I would do it like this:

  • You select a main attribute
  • You select a secondary attribute
  • The main attribute unlocks classes (and subclasses)
  • The main and secondary attribute unlocks the aspects.
  • If you want to keep the skill tree you could make it such that to use a higher level card you need 1 card at most 2 levels lower. Level 1 cards can always be taken. And you select a "virtual" level 0 card with your main and secondary attribute. (This way you can take level 2 cards with skipping level 1 cards).

Sorry, I was using "left" based on erroneous memory. It's really "do you have access to valor/codex" which determines stat (not trait) outliers. Eg: the Seraph and Guardian share certain core stats because they both have Valor, despite Seraph listing Splendor first as its primarily flavor / purpose driver.

When I built a Splendor/Arcana Cleric, I adjusted the core stats following the design guidelines in the Homebrew Kit to sync domain + fantasy within the range of distributions and totals provided as DH's baseline.

(Please note neither me nor the game is talking about Traits here, those you apportion as you desire during character creation)

Somebody on Reddit was talking about the MCDM "Rival/Villain" parties today, and that prompted me to take a swag at converting the Iron Pact over. Probably some more stuff that could be done with the Environment as a holder for Villain Actions, but figured this was a fun start.

So baseline, shields are an off-hand item which gives you additional armor slots. Works well, until you want to consider weapon swapping (or off-hand swapping for a context where what's in your hands matters).

Wondering what other mechanics I can use instead that would work better. Maybe a threshold bonus?

Honestly, if you let the reduced armor slots come off the shield first (i.e. once you've used up the slots associated with the shield its effectively no longer meaningful) it'd still probably be fine. Not like that doesn't describe how most shields work out in a heated battle anyway.
