Any body familure with the Dallas area. Addison to be exact. Hubby has made up his mind that we are to give up our home in the country, that is half way paid off might I add, for a blasted appartment in the city. He tore up my camaro so I can't go any where, the works. I have two children, is That area a good place to raise kids? Are the schools any good? He has listened to his mommy way too much. She has convinced him to move us up in that area. And convinced him that I don't need a car. Something smells fishy???? Any Ideas????

Well, I live in D/FW, and have since 1982. I used to live in Irving, and currently live in Coppell (fairly close to Addison, as it so happens). I came to the Metroplex as a 14-year old.

Generally, we have pretty good schools- especially private schools, if you can afford them- a full spectrum of leisure-time activities (museums, pro/college sports, kids sporting organizations, Scouts, gaming, music, etc.), and a generally healthy economy. When the time comes for the kids to graduate from HS and go on to college, we have SMU, University of Dallas, UNT (Denton), UT Arlington and a couple more, plus a very-well developed community college system that gets part of their faculty from those aforementioned universities.

We are also something of a shopping mecca.

Addison is one of the suburbs to the north of Dallas, and among other things, has a fairly diverse group of cuisines (traditional American, seafood, Indian, Tex-Mex, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Columbian, Brazilian, Franch, etc.).

One thing, though...unless you're on or near the bus or train routes, you NEED a car. Perhaps only the cities of California have the same kind of urban sprawl, and they generally have better public transportation. DART is pretty good- well maintained & clean- but its relatively new and has incomplete coverage.

In addition, D/FW is well situated to get to other parts of Texas. It is right on I-35, which is the main interstate connecting the Gulf of Mexico with points north- it goes from Corpus Christi to San Antonio, Austin, Temple, Waco and past D/FW and beyond...and is only a few hours from Houston.

In all honesty, Austin is my favorite city in Texas, but you can do a LOT worse than living in D/FW.

Thank you, My baby girl is an a+ student here in the country, though my boy has a hard time here. Hubby would take me to Dallas at least twice a month, to pick up his check. I am familure with certain areas though.

As far as the food and all, Familure with that also. There was a Jap, resturant I used to go to, next to the Hilton.

Is it cheaper to rent a home, or get an appartment?

I'm a homeowner myself, so I can't really say. I suspect, however, that renting a house would be cheaper.

However, you may also look into the foreclosure home market here. Even though our economy is relatively healthy, it hasn't been unscathed.

Your A+ student daughter should have no problem here, assuming she doesn't find too many distractions.

You didn't say what kind of trouble your son has. If its a learning disability, I can say that several of the school systems around here are aggressively proactive when it comes to kids with things like ADHD.

One of my cousins moved here (to Coppell) from New Orleans after Katrina. He had had a miserable time in the NO school system. He was underperforming and was a couple of years behind in certain subjects.

2 weeks after moving here, he had been tested, found to have ADHD, given a tutor and placed in remedial classes. As of this this writing, he is at least up to grade level in all subjects...and actually helping set the curve in a couple!

Addison isn't Coppell, of course- this town is fairly high-rent & snooty.;) But Addison is a nice suburb and should have a pretty good school system. Again, check out the private schools. The ones we have here are excellent, and many of the churches have some kind of private school. Cost, of course, varies- some can be quite pricey, but if you can demonstrate that you've got a kid who has the brains but you're short on cash, several offer reduced tuition and/or outright scholarships.

Thank you, as far as my daughter goes, she is a cheerleader, strait A's all the way, you name it she does it on her own. She adapts to any situation put in front of her.

My boy however, is sorta on the stubbern side when it comes to his school work. He gets bored with his work to easy and acts out. He has a habbit of getting picked on cuz he wont stand up for him self. I tought him to turn the other cheek so to say, and it turned aganist him.

People tend to brag on his sister and he feels left out so to say. We dont do this to him. I try to keep him on the same wave length as his sister as far as home life. Though I dont expect too much out of him. I have been told to put him on Rittlin, but no can do.

Any clue if the crime rates are on a good standing, or are they way out there?

Your son's story sounds familiar...like he could be a pretty bright boy who is frustrated with his school work for some reason. He could be mildly dyslexic or not being challenged by the work, and thus, bored. Either can be trouble in the long term.

But I'm just guessing- I don't have any kind of background in education. If/when you get here, I'd have him evaluated.

Crime is probably a little less than what you'd expect in the suburbs of a major city. Even with the influx of Katrina evacuees and the recession, we've had a generally low-ish crime rate in the Metroplex.

Thank you, as you can tell, schools and crime rate are my two major concerns.

It would be a blessing to get away from "mamadon/monster-in-law" lol
Though at the same, I am a country kinda girl, born and raised.....
