Dark, Grim & Gritty

First Post
Hi!

I have noticed a recent trend among RPGers in these pages to be drawn towards settings that are Grim, Dark & Grittier than the usual run-of-the-mill fantasy settings like GreyHawk, FR & Eberron (this from what I have noticed is not quite run-of-the-mill, in all fairness)...

I am keen to explore something along this flavour. I have noted that the Dark Legacies and Midnight have come up as being described as such, tho the Dark Legacies setting is less fantasy and more Post-Apocalypse techno type setting like Warhammer 40K.

Are there others I am not yet aware of? :)

Ahh, I subject know and love.

Iron Heros (sic)

Low-magic? Yes. Dark and gritty? No way.

Iron Kingdoms

I really wouldn't consider IK all that dark and gritty either. It's a great setting and quite different but not really all that dark.

Now we're talking. Conan is great. It's harsh and brutal and can be quite dark. My second-favorite d20 book. My favorite d20 book you ask?

Grim Tales.

Grim Tales is the quintessential low-magic/gritty d20 book. It's also the book that I compare most other books against. While not a setting in itself, it provides everything you need to run a gritty and low-magic campaign in a variety of settings and time periods.

Parts are but not the whole book and noth the part (classes for instance) that you'd need.

Does it have to be d20? You might have better luck fining a grim and gritty game that is not d20 and is a PDF

Thanks for your take Crothian.

Guess it doesnt necessarily have to be: What are these non-d20 settings that you have in mind? :)

Nothing in mind, but I know of other grim and gritty games and now I'm seeing if they are in PDF form. no luck yet, but I'm still looking.
