IDK, the various city-state artwork didn't seem to follow the vibe of the animation. But we will see next year!
I'll agree with this and its creating, at least in me, some disonance...Which is probably a good thing since the trailer alone did nothing for me... though it seems to have become something of a rallying point for a certain segment of the fandom I wasnt particularly sad to see go.

I don't know a ton. I know in The Wayback, when I once played videogames, I played Planescape Torment... what a underrated banger IMO. That Sigil seemed good.
LOL underrated I hope you're yanking my chain, it's one of the best regarded CRPGs in history! I actually think it's slightly overrated in CRPG circles in the way some very good albums get even more of a legend around them than they actually deserve, because the actual gameplay is not well-constructed, just the story, setting and characters. It is a banger overall for sure.

And a huge amount of what makes it that, more than most people who play it (or reviewed it!) understand is just the core, original PS setting as set up by Zeb Cook. It's basically just a good (if narrow, almost more of an adventure game than a typical choice-and-consequence-CRPG) story and characters that are completly grounded into that setting, and a lot of the "WHOA!!" stuff just basic OG Planescape. It was back before Chris Avellone's writing and behaviour went to hell (a very long and boring story, basically he's become a hard-to-work-with prima donna who seems to write the same couple of "irascible twerp" characters over and over, and has as a result gone from CCO at Obsidian in 2015 to freelance for the last 11 years).

Haha, no, I just would very infrequently deep dive for my few games and such. So, back when I had to skim magazines for info, that was one I got. Didn't know it was highly regarded. Genpublic seemed to know about BGII. Mature games were usually in some dungeon somewhere.

I am not convinced this product was originally conceived as "R" back when they were doing UA.

Out of curiosity, I looked up what the ESRB had to say about the three Dark Sun video games from the TSR era, and honestly this is hilarious:

  • Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager: T for Teen
  • Dark Sun: Shattered Lands: E for Everyone
  • Dark Sun: Crimson Sands: E for Everyone

So much for the impossiblity of Dark Sun without an R rating lol

I don't want either DS to become "add new monster-girls to your harem" but that fear is there.

* We need more information about the "Land-within-the-Wind" (Athasian Feywild) and the Grey.

* The weak point of DS could be the banning of player options. The solution could be to allow options for "spin-off" or expansions.

* And the city-states should be bigger, with more population. The economy should be relatively realistic.

When making Dark Sun, TSR were operating under a "Code of Conduct" modeled on the Comics Code. This definitely didn't allow them to make anything that was R-rated. Things may be implied, but not shown.

Sure, and I'm all for that. I think it is good for a media company to have their own internal standards that are consistent.

It is at least clear that Dark Sun wasn't ever "R", let alone "Hard" lol
