That's how I normally describe combat - opponents square off, thrusting and parrying during 6 second intervals. I like to have NPCs with high ACs square off against the PCs to make battles last longer to give that feel of gaining or losing ground, being pushed back or led onward. A lot of times it has to do with the strategies of combat, such as flanking and AoO, but it's nice to stop a PC barbarian with super-duper-greatest-cleave from sweeping down rows of enemy fodder by having him face one high dex, armored, swashbuckler-style defensive opponent. That's when I add in the jackie chan verbal flavor when they miss each other for the third round in a row, for a total of 18 seconds of fighting, which seems like a long time if you sparring to death with someone.
