Defense against Blasphemy?

Ovinomancer

No flips for you!
We are approaching the endgame in our campaign. The BBEG is most likely a half fiend with lots of HD. this puts his caster level for blasphemy above the 10 hit die limit for instant kill. Aside form silence, which will be impratical, are ther other ways to circumvent blasphemy? We have access to 7-th level wizard and cleric spells, with the ability to get higher level scrolls. Items are also a possibility.

Thanks

Death Ward [Clr4] should do the trick, though it only lasts 1 min/level so if you've got access to 7th level spells I guess you've got 15min.
Items that confer Death Ward effects would be good as well, of course.

Anything that boosts your Will save would be a less certain approach.

10 HD more than your level eh? Good Luck!

Hm.

Well, you won't have to worry about the death effect unless you have 10HD less than his caster level... Which is unlikely, IMO, or the challenge could prove to be simply too great for you to handle...

As for other ways of protecting yourselves from the automatic effects of Balsphemy... (note that if Blasphemy is a spell-like ability or a supernatural ability, some of those options won't work)

- Silence cast near (just behind) the BBEG might help.
- If Blasphemy is a spell or a spell-like ability, wouldn't dispelling / counterspelling it be an option?
- Death Ward against the death effects
- Freedom of Movement against the Paralysis
- Restoration to heal the weakness
- Spell Immunity
- Dispel Evil
- Spell Resistance
- A ready action to get the hell out of there when he starts casting Blasphemy (or a ready action to move out of the area when the cleric or wizard (who also readied an action) shouts "Blasphemy! Run away!".
- A ready action to pummel the guy when he starts casting the spell
- (not sure about this) a ready action to cast a wall spell between the BBEG and yourself
- Holy Word :)
- Repulsion (keep the BBEG 40' away)
- Project image (for wizard)
- Bardic Countersong ability?
- Anti-magic Field

Good luck!

Death Ward won't work, as Blasphemy is not a [Death] effect. Will save boosts are also useless, as it does not allow a save.

Instead of silencing yourselves, ready to cast silence in the air next the the fiend when he uses blasphemy. That will negate his 1/day ability, but leave you outside of the silence zone.

If you can get a bard to come along and sing to give you extra hit dice, that might keep you out of range for the death portion, but you'll still be weakened, dazed, and paralyzed, which is effectively the same thing.

Out of curiosity, why ISN't silence a viable option? Cast Rary's Telepathic bond for communication and get your wizard and cleric metamagic rods of silent spell. What else are you worried about?

Scrolls of greater spell immunity.

Alternatively, how about undetectable alignment? Will blasphemy affect you if your alignment cannot be determined?

Yes. The spell does not need to determine your alignment. As long as you are not Evil the spell will affect you.

In Arms and Equipment, there's a ring of Greater Counterspelling. It allows you to counterspell a spell of 9th or lower that is either cast on you or is casted withing 90' of you. You just have to find someone that can put the spell into the ring for you.

Greater spell immunity is what you need. That is the only really reliable defense against Blasphemy besides being evil. Spells and items that grant SR are unreliable defenses but they do work. Lastly - Spread out! If you are not bunched in the area of effect he is less likely to use it and if he does, you keep the damage to a minimum.

Spell-like abilities can't be counterspelled (except with Dispel Magic if you agree with the Sage).

I would fdo the following:

pre-combat buff everyone with Spell Resistance from the cleric
in combat have the cleric ready a silence to cast near the blasphemer

If you have access to lots of scrolls of greater spell immunity that would be good, but also expensive depending on how many characters there are that need to be covered.
