T'chaakha's Story. Fantasy AGE 2e. Solo Session #2

Ancestry: Each Draak is different. Their dragon heritage gives them a special ability. T'chaakha inherited thicker hide which gives him an extra 2 points of armor protection. Grovnoch can breathe fire, while Nheria has limited magic resistance.

DAY 1 continued
Evening:
The scouts have reached the first camp of the trek. It is located in a cave with a natural staircase which can be climbed to reach a 10 x 10 yards rock plateau. Sitting with their backs to the cave wall the three scouts wait for the lizard hind legs to be ready. Grovnoch is an excellent cook (cooking focus) who always carries bottles of spices in his backpack. The cave is illuminated by the cooking fire. From the rock plateau the scouts can see the two cave entrances and the small pool of natural water with a rock pillar in the centre. They sometimes share their camp with friendly strangers. Event? (1d6, roll 1 = Event, 1d6 = neutral). A bat swarm enters the cave by one tunnel, swirls around the central pillar and then exit from the other. The scouts watched to spectacle unperturbed.

Night: The night is (1d6, roll = 2) uneventful.

DAY 2

Morning:
The scouts wake up refreshed. After a quick bite they resume their scouting trek. It's a simple but necessary mission. T'chaakha is content with such a task. It's a life style that suits him. He vastly prefers it to his previous post as a town guard. Event? (1d6, roll 5 = no event). The companions travel deeper in the tunnel system.

Afternoon: After a short rest, the scouts (Event? 1d6, roll 1 = negative) hear the clashing of weapons on armor not far ahead. They race forward, the tunnel turns left for 10 yards, and then they enter a 20 x 60 yard long cave. Merchant dwarves are attacked by Deep elf bandits. Two dwarves and one elf are on the ground immobile. Two more dwarves are fighting against three Deep elves.

T'chaakha: In the name of the Dragon Lord of Vornesh, SURRENDER and drop you weapons! (communication 14 vs willpower 8, 14, 15).

The deep elves are surprised by the forcefulness of T'chaakha's command. The shortest one drops a smoke bomb on the ground. It breaks and the area fills with swirling gray fumes. The Draak can hear the fleeing footsteps of the deep elves.

Bolnord, a black bearded dwarf, dressed in a burgundy heavy leather armor with golden accents, advances towards T'chaakha: Well met Draak warriors! I am Bolnord of the Hermordak Forges. Your actions honour our mutual protection pact. I lost two of my caravan guards to the Deep Elves and my two sons are injured. Can you help us?

T'chaakha: I am T'chaakha leader of our small band of scouts. A tragedy to meet under such circumstances. May your valorous guards rest in peace. Nheria is our healer (Intelligence healing focus). She will tend to your son's wounds. We can protect you as far the next Draak scout camp and during the night.

Bolnord: A most generous offer! I humbly accept.

Nheria immediately threats the wounds to the two injured dwarves. T'chaaka and Grovnoch place the bodies of the two dead dwarves in a small natural alcove. Then everyone collect rocks to cover the bodies. After a silent minute of prayer, the caravan and the scouts continue their trek towards the next scout camp.

The murderhobo millenial dude newbs have gone full evil. They were invited to a little feast with the orc lord and enjoyed the human-stew. This confirms for me that the next stage of the campaign is going to be Avernus. Let's see what real evil looks like...

A Snowball’s Chants!
Anhedonia in the Land of Gods.

Rafael Lancaster had a problem. He was proud of his brother’s daughter: her independence, her willingness to use money to get what she wanted… Except when what she wanted was a plunging dress for a “Dames and Detectives” masquerade. Some New York tailor had made it, probably expecting it was for a sassy shorty and not an 11-½-year-old niece.

Rafe’s brother was equally stumped. They decided on a suitable lie: the dress was so good that all the other girls would be jealous! Anizah, not expecting deception, agreed to put on a coat.

The rest of the girls came in from the snow, and Rafe was able to make some time with his fellow adult companions (wuxia doctor Xiao Yun and antique smuggler Ivan Kochev), and things were copacetic until charades. Pollina’s inability to communicate "radio program” resulted in her getting her hair pulled by Albertha, and soon the entire Honorable Association of Girl Socialites were at each other’s throats! Only Xiao’s martial expertise, and Rafe’s jaw-dropping supply of desserts, was enough to get the girls separated into different rooms. From there, Xiao detected a chi imbalance in everyone who had been playing outdoors.

Rafe promised to get to the bottom of the case, while Devika promised “to get to the bottom of this bowl of ice cream.”

Chemical and mystic analysis showed some oddities: the snow had been modified to transmit reversed anions linked to that of the Chintamani Stone! The famed Nepalese artifact was said to be able to remove desire by getting rid of emotions… If its properties were reversed, it could bring suppressed emotions to the fore. And the one person capable of weaponizing such an effect in the form of frozen precipitation was Dr. Jacqueline Frost (last seen being whisked through a portal to the Himalayas at the climax of Storm of the Century)!

Rafe was able to reverse the effects of the snow by having the girls take a dip in the heated pool. (The joys of being a millionaire!) And then, not wanting to be around for the apologetic reunions, the trio and HAGS chair Devika went to where their favorite Himalayan lived… The Bronx!

Steel Eagle, a.k.a. Gyatso Sereng, was drinking the night away at the Yankee Tavern. He would love to help, of course, if the group could get his truck out of an O’Rourke gang lockup. With Kochev’s skill at intrusion, it was no problem, and Eag was soon telling the group about where the stone was last seen: Kathmandu. But Buddhism was for losers: Americans loved big emotions. Imagine how boring it would be at a Tibetian baseball game!

Rafe, a power player, decided to call on his company’s research department. They pulled an all nighter to get him all the information he needed to successfully mount an expedition to the roof of the world.

Of course, the permits needed to be approved, so soon the group was in the Indian capital of Delhi. As they got to the hotel, they were shocked as people started giving them hand bills about a visiting German diplomat: one who looked exactly like Kochev!

Hans Pilger was arriving in two days to "promote Aryan solidarity,” and although Ivan disagreed, the two looked extremely similar. Rafe decided the group should use this to their advantage: why try and get an appointment with the powers that be, when they could usurp an existing one? The group lacked a true investigator, so the trio had to use chicanery, bribery, and a dinged rolodex to get a meeting between the two men and the travel minister VK Krishna Menon. Xiao spent this time checking out a local herb shop… and ran into Hans!

VK read “Hans” the riot act, talking about the recent failures of the Third Reich on the world stage. Ivo did what he did best: told preposterous lies and made unfulfillable promises. Rafe spent a steady supply of rupees to keep minor functionaries out of the room.

Meanwhile, Xiao stalled the extremely pleasant diplomat with stories about herbology and mushroom gathering. Despite representing a fascist government, Hans seemed more interested in her than Ivo usually was.

With no actual bad behavior to cite, the travel minister gave the group permission to enter Nepal… With a banditry prevention escort, of course.

Kochev proved his worth again; his fake documents passed muster at every checkpoint. Soon the group was traveling through the switchbacks and dangerous mountain passes, past gorgeous green valleys… with the Nazis surely close behind.

Kochev, despite urging from his companions, refused to shave his distinctive mustache or dye his hair. Which was a problem when he was almost assassinated by a Nazi hunter! The shot missed by inches, and the honor guard was about to return fire when Xiao leapt up to his position. The shooter’s name was Nolan Bartiki, and having lost his family to the SS, he had been wandering around Asia to try and move on… until he had heard of a Nazi delegation!

Xiao explained the situation, and Nolan joined the party.

Unfortunately, overland travel was not in the group's skill set, so they were exhausted by the time they reached Kathmandu. (The only reason they hadn’t been caught yet was Rafe stopping to cause a rockslide behind them.)

The city was cheery and eager to welcome visitors, especially rich ones. Rafe, Ivo and Devi indulged in the wonders of the Palace/Hotel, while a determined Xiao headed to the monastery. There, the head monk immediately recognized her spiritual fortitude… and bade her to meditate with him in the presence of the Stone.

Unfortunately, the stone removed in her all desire: including the desire to leave or inform her friends of her situation.

She meditated on a familiar sutra, somehow known by the local master as it was by her old sifu:

Dark is the abyss without; bright is the abyss within.

The rest of the group eventually came after her, with Rafe getting sidelined as a bland Caucasian and his sidekick Devika being exalted. Ivo snuck through the silent temple, reaching the stone and reminding Xiao of her earthly duties.

He also made sure to question the head monk about his association with Dr. Jaqueline Frost. He admitted that she came through, and intended to spread the word of Hindu-Buddhist non-attachment by driving others to unrelenting emotion, so they would need wisdom to have any society at all. Having studied for ages at the temple, he had no desire to keep the Stone, or to give it to them.

Xiao took it.
***
Downstairs, the Nazi expedition had finally arrived. Brigadeführer Ernst Holk was surprised and delighted to see another white man in such an environment, and made great small talk with Rafe. Lancaster was able to slow the man down, sharing travel stories, but eventually the Nazi thugs demanded the monks give them the stone.

Xiao came down the stair staircase… and handed the Stone over!

The Kommandant was elated… but then neutral. Direct exposure to the Chintimani Stone suppressed his love of country. And without strong leadership, his soldiers seemed unwilling to take on the (potentially extremely dangerous) monastery.

Ivo, feeling underappreciated in the exchange, decided to pick a fight with his doppelgänger Hans! It was quite a scuffle before Xiao grabbed both of them and conked their identical faces together, ending hostilities.

Rafe, unwilling to take on a trained combat squad, decided to blackmail the expedition for the artifact. It would look very bad for Germany if, after a diplomatic failure, one of their prize scholars had abandoned the fatherland to study among a lesser culture! With the stone, he and his educated companions were able to create an antidote to Dr. Frost’s concoction. Calling in some connections in the Army Air Corps, he was soon helping seed clouds with the antidote as part of “Operation Santa’s Sleigh”. When he returned to his home, Phoenicia, it was almost time for a Christmas fundraiser. And the girls wanted to have a snowball fight!

This posting covers three sessions:
The RAAF people said the plane had been time-jumped by 29.5 days, which is one cycle of the phases of the moon. Moon goddess, moonlight . . . That was enough confirmation of Dr Fletcher's idea for us to borrow a van from the RAAF, load up her, her luggage, the statue, and the jetpack and head for Sydney. We called ahead from a payphone (it is 1949) to get clearance to bring her to HQ, and ended the session there.
The next session was spent at HQ, talking to Dr Fletcher and recruiting her into our organisation. We also talked to the goddess who resides in the statue, and got information from other sources. It became clear that there were well-connected people in Auckland, New Zealand who really wanted the statue and were willing to commit serious crimes to get it. They were apparently a group of the "Daughters of Dionin." Dionin was a pre-Roman serpent god worshipped in Derbyshire, England. The modern revival was upper-class ladies fond of decadent rituals, which was not interesting until 1945. Some of them survived Serpentfall, and the cult has made a comeback.

The session after that, the characters flew to Auckland, made contact with the MI5 office and the police there, and did some mundane investigating, starting with the people who'd tried to get the statue from Dr Fletcher. Since they are quite socially prominent, that wasn't hard, but nor did it reveal a great deal. At the end of the session, we'd seen one of them, Delia Risborough, leave her home and drive away.
GURPS 4e Day After Ragnarok:

Politely asked cultists to desist.
In the latest session, we successfully shadowed her in our hired car. She drove out into the suburbs, turned into a street of large villas, and was admitted to one that had a large wall around its grounds. We parked in a side-street close enough to avoid GURPS long-range penalties, and Johannes Taylor, our magician, did some rune-casting. That revealed:
  • The villa and grounds are a place of secrets, some of them quite sinister.
  • There was no active magic going on, but there had been in the past.
  • There are a lot of serpents there, which is very indicative, because New Zealand has no native snakes.
We went back into the town centre, looked up the address in the electoral roll, and found it was the home of Lady Jessica Torrington, the widow of a peer who came out here pre-WWII to run a sheep station. The marriage was childless, and the peerage is extinct, all the potential heirs having died when Serpentfall crushed most of England. She and her husband were both from the English Midlands, which doesn't prove anything, but is consistent with the Daughters. She's far higher status than any of our other suspects, so a plausible candidate for leading this branch of the cult.

Back at the hotel at about 4pm. we wrote a report, in case we vanished, then two of us encoded and checked it, found we'd got it wrong, had dinner and did the encoding and checking right the second time. The third party member, Don Williams, went down to the docks - there are a lot of docks in Auckland, it having two large natural harbours - with Detective Sargent "Nosey" Parker of the local police. They were looking for information on how the attempt to steal the statue from an Auckland storage establishment was organised and if local criminals were enlisted for the job.

The result was that three local criminals were hired at the right time. Parker wasn't willing to go to the pub where they'd likely be found without a lot of constables for backup, being fond of his limbs and ribs.

Reconvening at the hotel at 10pm, we discussed options, slept on it, and reached some conclusions:
  1. Delia is part of an organisation which was prepared to bring down an airliner and kill the passengers to get the statue. She's also linked to Lady Torrington.
  2. We haven't proved that the attempted theft was linked to the airliner attack. It probably is, but that doesn't matter very much because of the much larger attempted crime.
  3. The Imperial government cannot put up with this kind of thing. If Lady Torrington can be persuaded to put a stop to it, that will do. If we try that and get attacked as a result, that's incriminating.
We decided to approach Lady Torrington, officially and politely and ask her to stop it. The alternative is to be stomped by the Imperial government. We wrote, encoded and checked a second report, sent them both to Sydney, and got to work preparing best uniforms, visiting cards, etc. The reply telegram said YOU HAVE OPERATIONAL DISCRETION STOP BE BL**DY CAREFUL STOP.

We arrived at the villa at 4pm, presented the visiting card, and asked to speak to Lady T on a matter of serpents. The rather burly chap on the gate twitched significantly at that, 'phoned the house and was told to let us in. The other burly chap dressed as a footman, but not looking very convincing at it opened the front door and conducted us to a sitting room where the maid was delivering tea and cucumber sandwiches. Lady Torrington is quite old - in her late sixties as of the late 1940s - and was in an upright chair. There was also a much younger woman, introduced as Fiona, who was deliberately slouching in an armchair.

We presented our polite threat; Lady Torrington reckoned we'd better be able to back that up if we went public, and we smiled at that. After some fencing, Lady T indicated she'd take the matter under advisement. Johannes' Body Language skill was telling him that Fiona is mad as a box of frogs, and hostile. As we left, Don noticed the tattoos peeking from under the footman's collar which definitely hinted at a past as a merchant seaman.

Our conclusion was that we'd had a first engagement and not utterly messed it up. As we drove back into town, the brakes of the car suddenly failed, and the scene faded to black as we managed to stop.

Those the Comet Brings by JC Connors
Blam blam blam! "Give me that." BLAM BLAM BLAM.

Genre and power level are closely aligned. This module was originally 1950s atomic horror about a bunch of teenagers (and an old lady they're giving a ride to) on the way to the Jersey Shore. The least capable person in our party was a millionaire engineering genius.

Things started out perilous; Lala, Devika, Rafe, Penny and Tacito were fleeing NYC for the 4th of July weekend. Then a dense fog rolled in, and their engine completely stopped. Fortunately, though, the driver was a stuntwoman. Peril averted.

The group proceeded to the nearest service station. In the trunk of one of the cars was a Brooklyn baker, who was "being taught a lesson" by a mafioso (currently absent). There was no staff, our group investigated (with 13-year-old Devi being intrigued by a risque calendar). In the bathroom was an amnesiac; in the garage was a meteor and five charred corpses! Probably horrifying to innocent teenagers, not so much to a quintet of mummy defeaters.

Further investigation led to the old brick factory.
Tacito mused: "That must be where they make old bricks."
The mobster was there, mind-controlled, along with two lizard-like aliens and the head of the invasion: the Luminous Emissary of Nyag-Zyan! How would the group possibly--
Devika used her mind powers to pacify one of the lizard men. Tacito, former champion boxer, clobbered the other. With the help of Rafe and Lala's distractions, Penny emptied her pistol into the gray saggy eye of the Emissary. It weakly tried to mind control Tacito... Then Penny emptied Rafe's pistol into it.
Invasion foiled.

Bloody Betrothal!

Going to the chapel and we’re gonna get buried?!

June 1936, Tokyo.

Zelda and her fiancé Yoji Sanada are at a dessert tasting. As the daughter of the General, three different confectionery companies vie for her interest. Although she doesn’t like chocolate, things are going well until the party is crashed by Yoji’s sister Yoshimi! She brought a posse with her (maid of honor, fiancé, best man). Team Zelda’s outnumbered, even with Zelda’s bridesmaid Hanako there. It’s an awkward scene as the Sanada siblings start bickering!

Where are our adventurers? At the “suggestion“ of General Saeki, they’ve been working overnight at the Ginza port. Well, Clara Tate, Rafael Lancaster, and Ivan Kochev have been working hard. Devika Velyapur, as a 13-year-old girl, finds a dark corner and gets some sleep.

The group finally clocks out, and heads towards Zelda's tasting… when two carloads of gangsters arrive! None of the foursome speak Japanese, but the locals aim guns at the gaijin and the race is on! ‘Something something Penny An’te’, bang bang bang!

Rafe, millionaire playboy, flashes a Breitling watch and a thick billfold. A driver, distracted, careens into a fire hydrant.

Ivo, master smuggler, finds a blind alley and cuts the engine.

Meanwhile, Japan’s upper crust trades barbs. The antagonizing Yoshimi seems to hold all the cards… until Zelda surrenders! She tells the chocolatiers that she’ll schedule them another time. Embarrassing, but much less than a yelling match.

In the back alley, Clara waits for the gun-toting gangsters to pull in… Then puts a hole through the windshield. The dead driver falls on the horn, alerting the police to the gangsters’ presence. Our heroes don’t stick around.

The next stop on the group’s itinerary is a dress fitting. Ivo and Rafe beg off, heading to the hotel for some well-deserved sleep. Well-rested Devi and hard-working Clara meet Zelda and head to the dressmakers.

Devi greets Zelda’s childhood friend with a hastily rewritten card,
Happy Hanakaho!

Clara, perhaps a bit tactless, doesn’t bother washing up. This presents no obstacle… Because the dressmaker is dead.

And on the street outside, Zelda’s old boss “Borracho” Naito seems to be calling the police!

Devi grabs incriminating evidence (like the dressmaker’s date book) while Zelda scans the scene… Finding a half-eaten candy bar on a desk. Odd! The group takes the back stairs while the police take the front.

Devika, who favors a straightforward conflict resolution style, is halfway across the crosswalk to confront Naito, when Clara grabs her and drags her away. (Later, Ivan gets the detective off the group's trail by meeting him in a bar and slipping him a fake wedding itinerary.)

The newspaper's evening edition reports the dressmaker's death as a suicide, one in an ongoing rash of them, going back months. Tragedy becomes reality as a nearby motorist careens towards the group. Devi pushes Rafe out of the way, and the driver collides with a brick wall, dying instantly. The passenger survives. Devi, who became an orphan because of a car wreck, weeps inconsolably. Pragmatic Zelda searches the car and finds a chocolate wrapper…

Later, Clara notices something off about Ivo: he seems to be suffering from malaise. Devi confirms that it’s mystical, and tied to the chocolate! The group heads to a nearby Buddhist temple, where the monks report that the city has been imbalanced chi-wise for about six months. Devi swipes a candy bar from a nearby neophyte. Ivo won’t admit anything is wrong, but suggests the group takes one of Devi’s earliest suggestions: go to the closest candy factory!

The factory is way too crowded for 9 PM. While the group is deciding on a plan (sneak in? Pretend to be interested in purchasing the place?), they see a flapper head in. When the door opens, there’s big band jazz! The place is an after-hours speakeasy!

Devi easily charms the taxi dancers.
“Aren’t you a little young?” one asks. The ex-goddess responds: “Aren’t you a little beautiful?”

The group tries to be sly with this investigation, but Yoji shows up, and his hyper-competitive sister emerges from the VIP area. She’ll give them a clue if they beat her in a dance contest. Zelda demurs, but Devi volunteers to dance with Yoji!

Little Miss धूप is an excellent hoofer, having roomed with professional Broadway dancer Lillian Lamb. But Yoshimi is no slouch herself! Zelda takes the stage and starts exhorting the crowd to clap and sing, pulling the contest in the group’s favor.

There’s not much time to bask in the victory though, because jumping from the upper floors is Hanako! The group quickly grabs some tablecloths and rescues her. Devi poses for the crowd.
“Someone call me Judoh Macabee, ‘cause I just saved Hanako.”
Yoshimi is shocked out of her rivalry, promising to keep all the bystanders safe and away from sharp objects. The group goes back to investigating (passing through a shipping warehouse without ever being spotted or confronting the thugs), and finds out that the chocolates are all being shipped from a shrine in the city mountains! There, an evil fog seems to be dripping down the hills…
The group expertly infiltrates. In a catacomb, they find two death spirits making chocolate!

Zelda steps out of the shadows, putting a hole through one of the kettles…
“I still hate chocolate!”
Devi steps forward and, before unleashing her powers, asks the spirits what they’re doing. They explain that they are spirits of death, but have found joy in creation: making candy. But what they thought was a few days of work has been months, and their sweet treats had taken on their essence. Zelda implores the spirits to pass on. They will, if someone will take up their methods and tradition.

Yoji, still unemployed since leaving General Saeki’s service, volunteers to manufacture high-quality, non-debilitating chocolate. An exciting job to match his exciting bride’s.

“I’ve heard of death by chocolate,” quips Rafe, “but never chocolate by death!”

Lady Torrington is quite old - in her late sixties as of the late 1940s - and was in an upright chair. There was also a much younger woman, introduced as Fiona, who was deliberately slouching in an armchair.

GURPS 4e Day after Ragnarok

We're annoying the right people!
After our brakes failed and we managed to stop, I expected an attack, but nothing happened. We got out of the car, asked a friendly local resident to call a local garage for a tow truck, and then started looking under the car, to see if there was obvious sabotage (none of us have Mechanic skill).

We were lucky enough to spot an annoyed snake coming out of the underparts of the car. This is 1949, in the days of separate chassis and bodywork. Don Williams, our animal expert, got the snake calmed down and into a bag. It's an obscure Indian species, and thoroughly poisonous. There was a trail of fluid behind the car, which wasn't petrol, so we guessed it was probably brake fluid.

The tow truck arrived and took us and the car to the garage. A joint clamp on a brake line was missing, which had let all the fluid leak out. It was presumably loosened while we were inside at Lady Torrington's place, and the snake persuaded to rest in the underparts. The garage mechanic was quite upset about this, but we asked him to keep quiet (we were in Army uniforms) and he agreed, fixed it, refilled the brake circuit and checked for other problems (none). We paid him, and headed back into the city, considering that this was two attempts to kill us, but neither was very good. Serpent psychosis could well be a cause, and it doesn't look as if Lady Torrington has accepted our request to shut things down. Not that we expected her to, but given her status, we felt we ought to give her the chance. The next task is to identify Fiona, but the newspaper archives had closed for the evening.

We went out in civilian clothes to get dinner from the good fish-and-chip shop Parker had taken Don to the previous evening. On the way back to the hotel, Johannes spotted someone tailing us, fairly slim, concealed in a long overcoat. We spent a bit of time leading them around the city centre, trying to force them to come closer so we could grab them. We didn't succeed at that and they eventually realised they'd been spotted and started to leave. At this point we openly approached ... and were intercepted by thugs who'd been hiding in the shadows. There was a fight, using Intimidation and Brawling skills. I was a bit worried about that, since we're a party of intellectuals, but we managed to win. Three limped away, and we captured one.

Interrogating the prisoner revealed that they'd been hired by "this weird blonde bint" who definitely seems to be Fiona, and "a merchant seaman type" who seems consistent with Lady Torrington's goons. We let him go, with a warning that those people are Serpent cultists, and working for them is likely to be quite unhealthy.
