Detect Evil... Detect Invisibility?

Hey everyone. Ran another game session tonight, and something I couldn't resolve came up. Can detect evil show an invisible person's aura? If so, that seems rather overpowered (especially for a paladin who can do it at will). Anyone know what's official?

Yes. If an invisible person is stupid enough to stand in the same area as a paladin concentrates for 3 rounds - the amount of time needed to get fixes on individual auras, then they deserve what's coming to them.

Since detect evil doesn't pinpoint evil creatures instantly, I don't believe this use to be overpowered.

Well, technically yes it can. However, since detect spells need to focus 3 rounds before pinpointing a person location, its a highly ineffective method when compared to See Invisibility (not Detect Invisibility). If the invisible evil guy moved out of the Paladins current spell arc, your Paladin would have to shift his evil-mojo-detecting eyes and start over from round one. Detect Magic can also be used in this (ineffective) way.
