Game Title: Deus Arctica
System: Iron Heroes
Players Wanted: 1-2 more
Expected Posting Rate: 1 per day
There they stood, a line of children who became fugitives, who became rebels, who finally became crusaders. They waited in the snow, non-cemented antlers wrapped around their necks for warmth. Only this time, they were not in chains, and they would bleed on their own accord. This journey had started in a desperate struggle to avoid annihilation, but now, they fought for something greater than themselves. The Nath was dying, and it needed restoration.
Was it just that they wanted to cure the river, for their own salvation? Or did they want to prove to govaughn society that males were not useless in stressful times? That neither their sterility nor their demand for higher resources meant that they were deserving of execution? No matter the reason, they were each sure that this was the path of their heart.
There they stood, a line of men. Far beneath them, a circle of Immortals knelt in a circle in prayer to their mistress, the wicked goddess Igni. They waited in the snow for their leader to give the signal. Some of them would die today. But this time, death had meaning, served some purpose. A sudden eruption of light and sound came from beneath them. The time was now.
Niros couldn’t do this alone.
Hi everyone! It’s been about 14 months since Deus Arctica started, and we are now the largest running game on pbpHOUSE. We have had a couple players drop, a few more are on vacation, so I am taking the time to recruit 1 or 2 more players for this game.
This game takes place in my homebrew world Arius, on a northern, mountainous island near the city Oru. The original recruitment thread is HERE. The first rerecruitment thread is HERE. More details about Arius can be found on the wiki, HERE (particularly relevant is the section about Oru’s mythical origin HERE), and the game forum is located HERE.
The Story Thus Far
[sblock=Part 1]
One unlikely morning, Oru was infiltrated by a servant of Igni. The servant, possessing magical ability, murdered a godchosen of Garland and assaulted a community leader before he was killed. In response to his attack and to the worsening condition of the Nath River, a small team assembled to travel north of Oru into the mountains, convinced that the plight of the river and the servant’s presence are the same mystery. Each had their own reason for going:
The group was well-prepared for the task and was met initially with hospitality from a couple living in the wilderness, but after traveling into the harsher foothills encountered hostile tribals. Eventually captured, the party was given a chance to win their survival by traveling unarmed to the resting place of the tribe’s Savior – an enigmatic figure revealed to be Belthesar’s ancestor. In addition, Aja discovered that her father, Orlo, had suffered a similar fate in the foothills a month ago, having gotten himself trapped deep in the Savior’s cavernous tomb.
After paying respects to Melchior Frostrogh, the tribal’s Savior, and rescuing Aja’s father, who had suffered gravely from the effects of malnourishment, they group sought an exit to the cave, choosing a more dangerous route for speed, as Orlo’s condition was precipitous at best. This path, however, proved exceptionally dangerous, as the group was pitted in combat against a terrible animal that used needle sharp fingers do inflict terrible wounds to Aja and Sayda.
After leaving the Savior’s tomb, the group was treated with great respect by their former captors. They rested for a few days, and during this time, govaughn hunters from the inhospitable true mountain lands arrived – they were chasing an enigmatic fugitive known as “Niros”. Shaltu immediately knew that this Niros was her Hopeful, the govaughn with “floppy antlers” from her dreams. However, she kept this information to herself until much later. In addition, the govaughn revealed that a figure known as the “Frost King” had taken control of the Lake of the Heavens, and that he is the probable cause of its impotence.

[sblock=Part 2]
Sayda, gravely injured, returned to Oru with Orlo. The remainder of the group decided to travel with the tribe to the “northern lakes”, a body of water that served as a common trading point between govaughn and humans. Unfortunately, they were ambushed by another, cannibalistic tribe along the way, sparking a long, brutal fight. During this battle, they were introduced to two more allies:
During the fight, rumors of the Frost King were consolidated by some of their adversaries. Eventually, the group vanquished the hostile tribe but unfortunately, the casualties were so high that they were effectively traveling alone for the remainder of the journey. They did arrive at the northern lakes, however, without further incident. At the lakes, Shaltu revealed that she had seen Niros in a vision, and the govaughn there showed much interest in her aid with capturing Niros. In addition to trading, the govaughn there [all with stiff antlers] were blockading the narrow path to the higher mountain. But it seemed that Niros was already there, and during the night, Niros used a distraction to meet with Shaltu alone.
Under the cover of the same distraction, three individuals managed to sneak past the govaughn blockade. One of them was Niros. The second was Black. The third was Aja. Pushed by the govaughn to chase Niros, and given the intrigue surrounding Aja, the group waited only a day before continuing up the mountain path, into true inhospitable land.
Coming into contact with a small govaughn villa, the group finally learned the truth of who Niros was and what he did to deserve the wrath of his people. It seems that the majority of govaughn are one gender, able to reproduce and fertilize “crops”. There is a minority of them with “floppy antlers”, unable to do these things. In times of economic stress, this second gender is seen as a burden on society, and are ritually executed. Niros was one of these “males”, on the cusp of execution, when he saw a vision of a woman (Shaltu) whom he believed to be Igni at the time. The vision gave him the courage and strength to escape. Since then, he has started a revolution amongst govaughn society, helping free willing males wherever he can. Many govaughn have died, and govaughn society as a whole vilifies Niros.
In addition to this truth, the villa confirmed the story about the Frost King. Apparently, the Frost King was a sworn enemy of Igni and had uprooted an ancient order of Igni-worshippers (to which the assassin that appeared in Oru belonged), the "Immortals", from the Lake. Angered by the Frost King’s actions, the Immortals resorted to hiding in the mountains, biding their time until a counterstrike could be carried out. To root out the Immortals, the Frost King froze most of the Lake, greatly decreasing the Nath’s flow. Armed with this knowledge, the group resolved to push all the way to the Frost King. What they do when they get there, they were yet unsure.
Traveling past the govaughn villa, the group came again into contact with Niros, this time as a group. Realizing that they are not justified in deciding Niros’s culpability, they expressed interest only in achieving their primary objective – the restoration of the Nath. Niros explained that the Frost King has a specific vendetta against the Immortals, and he will unfreeze the Lake when he gets what he wants. In addition, Niros offered to help the group assault a group of Immortals in hopes of an audience with the Frost King. With no other leads, the group agreed.
Following Niros’s plan, they attack the Immortals under Niros’s distraction, so they can effectively pick off their powerful foes one by one.

Joining the Game
I use Iron Heroes to run this game. However, I asked this in the other recruitment threads and I will ask it again – please do not let unfamiliarity with the system prevent you from playing. Obviously, experience is a plus, but an affinity for the story and a steady posting rate are far more important than knowing the rules for combat.
New characters will probably be drawn from Niros’s group of fugitive warriors. However, I will allow alternate ideas if they provide a reasonable explanation of how one came to be in the highest altitude, most inhospitable mountains of Oru. Incoming recruits will begin at 6th level, with 31p point buy. Details can be discussed later.

Each had their own reason for going:
- Belthesar [a berserker] is a young man in the Frostrogh clan who must complete a rite of passage in the dangerous foothills.
- Aja [an executioner] is a teenage girl looking for her father, who disappeared on his own mission to the north about a month prior to the beginning of the story.
- Vernan [a hunter] is a war veteran who has watched his daughter suffer economically from the river’s drying. Unable to help her financially, he must now travel north to discover what has caused the river to unexpectedly stop flowing.
- Shaltu [a harrier] is an honest courier for Oru who was the victim of a strange magical aberration during the servant’s attack. She has reason to believe that unless she will die in 30-40 days unless she finds a solution – a solution that lies somewhere in the mountains north of Oru.
- Sayda [a champion] is a godchosen of Garland, the god of War, an emigrant to Oru. She was instructed by her commander to initiate a foray into the north as a result of her brethren’s assassination, to discover more information about why he was killed.
