AI/LLMs Dice Roost, a free VTT with AI-voiced NPC

Dice Roost

Villager
Hey everyone,

I wanted to share Dice Roost, a free browser-based virtual tabletop I've been building for running tabletop RPG sessions online, no installs, just open a link and play.

A few things that make it a bit different:
  • AI-voiced NPCs: give an NPC a personality and let it actually talk back to your players during a scene, instead of you improvising every voice
  • Shared map with tokens, dice roller, character sheets, and session chat, all in one place
  • Built to be lightweight and easy to onboard a group into, no learning curve for new players
It's still actively growing and I'd love feedback from people who actually run games regularly. Happy to answer any questions here.

One of the functionalities that I'd want in VTT is live map generation. E.g., as the DM, can I describe a scene and get a good enough map instantly, to fight a combat on? I'm not sure the tech is there yet, but seems relevant .

At the moment it's not a planned feature, but it's definitely an interesting one! Technically it's not simple, because text-generation LLMs often struggle to also generate reliable images, especially when using lightweight models that have a great quality/price ratio for 'role speech' but not as much for media creation. However, I'll look into the request, which seems very interesting — maybe by implementing the option to connect a dedicated Gemini API, which with Nano Banana is very strong at creating images. Thanks for the feedback!

I actually added the map creation feature using an AI model, unfortunately, map generation is quite expensive in terms of tokens, and OpenAI isn't great in that role, so I implemented the ability to connect a new API key from a model called Stability, which also has a free plan you can subscribe to. I also took the opportunity to implement image generation for NPCs and Narration. There will be news about this soon, thank you for the feedback and for giving me the idea to implement a new feature. Have a good day! Luca.
