Dimension Door.

First Post
If you wanted to grab an object your enemy is holding and Dimension Door away, how exactly is that done. Dimension door isn't a touch spell, but it affects object you touch, even those an enemy is holding on a failed save.

Let us take this situation, your spellcaster is facing down an enemy spellcaster in combat, the enemy spellcaster is wielding a wand. You want to touch the wand and use Dimension door to remove both yourself and the wand from the immediate area. What exactly would have to be done to accomplish this, mechanically speaking.

As a side question, could you Dimension Door into an object and voluntarily forego you save for a period of time to wait out some danger by remaining in the Astral Plane? (I assume yes based on the text, but I thought I'd ask since it seemed like an oddball use of the spell.) Assuming you did stick around in the Astra Plane, what could you do while there?

If the enemy is still holding on, it's an attended object - no joy.

I'd resolve wresting it away as an unarmed disarm attempt. Of course, since that's a standard action, you'd need to be Hasted to DD away in the same round.

As for voluntarily failing a save - sure, doesn't seem like there's a problem with it.

Strike an object, being a grab this should most likely also be a touch attack, though since the AC bonuses you loose on touch attacks are basicly the same as the bonuses you loose when someone attacks your equipment, 'touch' is most likely moot.

Cast the spell and the opponent gets a will save. The tricky part is since the strike an object is a standard action as is dimention door you'll need to deal with holding onto the wand for the opponent's turn, the Opposed strength checks for the enemy to possibly wrestel the wand free could be aproprate, or mabye dex or strenth, using the better of the two... I don't think there are really any precedents for this within the core rules (disarm is simpler because you just take something or you don't and that's it, you don't really struggle with the object beyond your action.

In my game, at least, I woundn't let someone get away with this, if you forgo any will saves you'd loose any chance to make later ones. Just to prevent abuse.

To the second part: be killed messily by a group of githyanki.

The spell is limited to willing creatues, but not objects. Attended or intelegent objects get a will save to resist the effects, however.

Also, you don't disarm or sunder things that arn't melee weapons, you strike an object to hit them (a bit harder, since they generaly get a +5 bonus when held in the hands). The logic being that if you're not parring and feinting with it it's much harder to hit. An important distinction, IMHO.

Point. Teach me to skim too fast... :)

There are rules for attacking a held object, but none for yoinking one... so whatever you come up with is going to be a man-on-the-spot house rule.

Strike a weapon uses opposed attack rolls; strike a held object uses an attack roll vs a static AC.

Disarm uses opposed attack rolls with size modifiers and two-hand modifiers. What would you recommend for yoink a held object?

And would ranks in Pick Pocket make any difference? ;)

Yoinking? LOL Is that a technical term? Cute. :)

Anyway, the FAQ covers disarming a wand from someone, if anyone's interested.
