Message: <blockquote data-quote="jerichothebard" data-source="post: 1871731" data-attributes="member: 4705">creepiness on the rockI agree fully with the earlier post regarding the atmosphere of Alcatraz island - it's mostly sad and wistful, rather than the angry you get at some other tragic/darkly historical sites.However.One of my coworkers used to work for the company that produces their audio tour (little digital recorders that lead you around in a proscribed tour, without guides; rent them for $5.  If you go, pay the fiver, it's worth it.)A few years ago, her company had a lot of maintenance to do on the players and headphones, so a group of them packed a night's gear and went out on the last boat, and camped in the cellhouse.  After their work was done, and long after the rangers had left, they did a flashlight tour of the areas not open to the public.  She says it was the creepiest thing she has ever done - the infirmary and the basement in the dark, by flashlight, on an old prison island...Some of the more brave people slept in some of the cells.  She chose to sleep on a catwalk.  No one had the cojones to sleep in solitary.jtb</blockquote>
