Mostly my goal with chess is getting to know the other player as a person. And telling little stories in my head about the pieces is part of the fun, yeah.Yeah, playing the dice odds in chess would be pretty weird.
But in all seriousness, chess to me is (unlike RPGs) a game of pure strategy where you play with one goal, and that goal is winning. I can't really think of any other way to play it. It's completely different from how I approach RPGs and even most CRPGs. Like, I don't imagine my bishop in a chess game as Archbishop Fauntleroy of Canterbury going on about the lord's wrath and smiting the wicked when I take a piece with it or something.
Also, I tend to prefer dice chess and taking insane risks when the other player might not be able to react ideally.
