Doctor Who 1.12 (6/2/06) Bad Wolf (spoilers)

Glad I wasn't paying attention to the way SciFi spoiled the episode they were showing with the preview for next week--nicely played, SciFi.

I'm probably not the best one to start this--I was in and out a little during the episode, and I was still watching the Cards-Cubs game when the rebroadcast aired. BUT ...

Quite good. The way it opened, I was expecting a rather dismal reality-TV spoof, and I wasn't entirely disappointed in that. It seems one hallmark of Russell T. Davies-authored eps, at least in S1, is an interest in humor that, for me, too often veers into the farcical--I don't mind my Doctor Who leavened with some humor or lightheartedness, but farting aliens and wacky robots remind me a little too much of what I didn't like about the last few seasons of the original series.

But the episode picks up mighty quickly after that. I'd been pretty much unspoiled about what was to come, so the Dalek reemergence was a pretty good surprise for me, although when it became clear that there was some sort of deep threat, I figured there were only a couple of possibilities that would make the reveal not be a letdown, and the Daleks were No. 1 on that list for me.

Even though I may not be the biggest RTD fan, I really do like the sense of cohesion this season has had and how little things (and big things, too, like the "Dalek" Dalek) in earlier episodes foreshadowed this one. Well done overall, and I'm looking forward to 1.13, although with some trepidation.

I liked it, but there was one big 'problem' with it. Just before Rose gets zapped there's Jack flurishing his Big Gun (tm) while she's yelling that the android is armed. Why didn't he shoot it? He obviously didn't have any problem doing so to the other two. (Of course, then Rose couldn't get captured, but that's a pretty lame excuse.)

I've no idea how The Doctor's going to deal with this one! (But then, neither does he...)

I'm just wondering why, if the "disintegration beam" was really a transmat beam, there was a pile of dust behind after Rose got "killed." Still, it was a pretty good episode. And if I hadn't already accidentally read a spoiler revealing the Daleks as the season-end enemies, I'd be pretty upset with Sci-Fi for ruining the surprise with their mid-commercial-break promos.

I'm really looking forward to next week, to see what kind of plan the Doctor comes up with.

I really liked the new Doctor Who whenitfirst aired but the 'Bad Wolf' two parter (along withthe Rose's dad episode) made me fall in love with the show. Funny, smart writing, Chris Eccelston and Billie Piper, it just won me over. For those of you that haven't seen part 2 andare about to for the first...ooooh baby, are you in for a treat. I wish I could be you guys and see it all over again for the first time. :)

That was a fun episode. I look forward to seeing how they conclude all of this. I like the season it has had a good mix of episodes.

I enjoyed the episode.

At first, I was afraid that the whole episode was going to be kind of campy based on the first couple minutes. As soon as the Doctor realized people were being "killed" when they lost the games it got back on track for me.

I think the dust left behind after the "disintegrations" was a delibirate misdirection for the viewers on Earth.

I can't wait for the conclusion. Everything I've heard from people who have seen it has been very positive.

I'm torn in two directions, myself. On one hand, I'm loving the show and where it's going. I never saw the original show, only being peripherally aware of it, but peripherally aware enough to have made a solid point of putting this show on my (fairly limited) TV To-Watch list. The problem is, I really, really like Chris Eccleston as The Doctor. Which brings on the other hand.. that there's only 1 more episode wherein he'll still BE The Doctor before the other guy takes over.

I was kind of starting to really like Captain Jack, too. He's just SO sterotypically American in the midst of a bunch of Brits ("Am I naked in front of millions of people? Ladies, your numbers just went up." That was a great line, and he delivered it perfectly).

I'm really going to miss this Doctor, regardless of how the new one does.
