Does anybody know how well D&D has been doing?

I've been out of the 4e loop for..well, a good 2 years now. I know sales were strong early, and a year and a half ago they seemed decent. Does anybody know how well 4e products have been moving in their local game store?

I think Amazon Japan has been doing a good amount of selling for 4E, as they have kept a good supply available here. Of course I do not know any numbers.

There have been rumours of 5th edition since before essentials came out.

As for how well it is doing, nobody really knows anything except it may not be doing as wel as Pathfinder. At least on the FLGS channel. What no body on the outside knows though is how well that performance is.
Also nobody outside WOTC knows how big the DDI compomnent of D&D revenue is interms of D&D's financial performance. So much smoke, noise and fury get emmited in these discussions with no-one being any the wiser.

Are you talking about this topic or every topic on every messageboard ever? :)
Most messageboard discussions have some signal in all the noise, some more than others. This is one where it is mostly noise and no signal since there is nothing to generate signal. We have a couple of facts and a bunch of anecedotes but no context or anyway to judge the relevance of the facts or anecedotes.

At my FLGS its pretty weird. Sales of 4th Ed material are slow, but they have been ever since 4ed was released. The vast majority of the regulars at the store jumped headlong into Pathfinder and despise everything 4ed.

That being said though, there are now 3 times as many 4ed games going than there ever had been at the FLGS. Add to that the fact that the store is also running Encounters and Lair Assault for the first time (in addition to the regular games) and in many respects 4ed has never been stronger -- even if book sales are still relatively slow. Obviously this says nothing about D&D as a whole as our little store is far from big enough to provide any kind of an impact on WotC.

According to this, 4e is getting it's clocked cleaned by the domestic RPGs, but that's no surprise. WotC had Hobby Japan maintain the exact look and production of 4e, which prices the books out of the student range. The group I play with is largely older guys (30s and 40s), and per them, only folks with a regular job can afford to get into D&D.

That said, I think it's notable that the Japanese translation of the Rules Compendium is already ranked 4th, and it hasn't even come out yet. And yet, I'm shocked at its 6,000 yen price tag (roughly $70 US). Essentials was supposed to be a more cost affordable road to entry, and the Japanese Rules Compendium is priced the exact same as the Core Player's Handbook. That's one hell of a mark-up.

According to this, Pathfinder is doing quite well as an import. (As this list shows, the English D&D books are ridiculously cheaper than their Japanese versions.)
